Cubase SX3 sync setup for MMC38

Hi guys,
I've got a tough question (well.. it's tough for me). I hope someone out there has enough knowledge to point me in the right direction. I'm running SX3 on a PC with a MOTU 828 (1st gen) and an MTPAV. The clients that I write for (backing tracks) often perform in venues that use hi8 tape. Sooooo.... I went out and bought a used DA38, MMC38, and an IFTAD (to convert the 828's lightpipe signal into TDIF for the DA38). I've hooked up MIDI cables between the MTPAV and the MMC38. The MMC38 is hooked up to the DA38. I have fiber optic cables going between the MOTU 828 and the IFTAD. The TDIF is connected between the IFTAD and the DA38. I would like to be able to control everything (transport-wise) via Cubase SX3.
Question time:
1) what should the id# be on the DA38? When it shows "2", I get a "E Clock" error. Setting the id to "1" gives me no error. But I thought that it was supposed to be at "2" cause it is the slave of the MMC38.
2) what is the sync setup in Cubase SX3 supposed to be? do I run internal clock or MTC? what about the other random setting in that dialog box? the HTML is a joke for this dialog box.
3) do I need to run BNC cables between the IFTAD and DA38 or should everything be clocked fine from the MTC?

The only thing that is certain is that some of you guys out there will find these questions elementary. I apologize for that as I am more of a composer/arranger that is happy to learn about this sync stuff.
