I have been using cubase sx for some time now, and I STILL have yet to figure out the right settings in the EQ department (other than just turning everything up). So my questions are...
1) Does anyone have any good references on where my settings should be when recording acoustic?? I know its all preference but I need a start.
2) Should I look into an external mixer??
3) ALSO, whats the deal with compression/limiter?? I know i'm not doing it correctly by just turning it on, or is that simple??
haha I have sooo many questions so ANY help would be really appreciated...
thanks, Art

Ideally, you should use your microphone choice and placement to achieve the sound you want when tracking acoustic guitar. In that case, you won't really need much in the way of EQ. About the only EQ I like to use on my acoustic tracks is a low cut at about 80-100Hz.

Compression takes a while to really figure out. Twiddle with the settings and listen to how they affect the sound. Don't use it if you don't need it.

There are some good articles here:

Should be enough to get you started. EQ is a tough cookie if you're flying blind and trying to figure it out on your own. Its *really* simple once you understand what frequencies gerenally do what with the different instruments.

Take care,
Chris

My current setup is a Rode NT1-a passing through a presonus tube blue going into cubase. I'm just not getting that sound i'm looking for. I heard good things about the fishman aura

WOW. that's a REALLY informative site, thanks! scary how technical it can get.

If you don't know how to use an EQ, it doesn't matter whether it is hardware or software, it still won't do you any good.

I point the mic towards the middle of middle of the neck. Ok besides the fact of being either an onboard or external mixer, don't they perform the same function?

They do the same thing as far as mixing goes. An outboard mixer will have mic preamps, so that might be useful.
