I have the Cubase "demo" that comes bundled with the Tascam US-224 and I was wondering a few things.
  • The click track leaves a residual clicking when I turn it off
  • Can I only playback eight tracks at one time??
Someone please help me!!

Ok, now what can I do about the latency on that click and why can I only play eight tracks at a time if the software supports sixteen tracks?

1) Did you record with mics and headphones? There might have been bleed-through from the clicktrack on the headphones, which was recorded through the mic, in which case it would be stuck in your waveform, and you're screwed.
2) There default number of active tracks is 8. It is nowhere near the maximum number of tracks. Right-click underneath or on a track at the left side of the window, and select "Add Audio Track" or "Add Midi Track".

I don't belief the first problem is a latency issue. It could be if you have a really, really, REALLY high latency, but even then there would be only 1 or 2 clicks more. I would be really suprised if it is a latency problem.

I am not talking about the number of tracks but the number of channels on the internal mixer. Lets say I have recorded eight tracks and have them assigned to channels one through eight on the mixer. If I want to record a ninth track, how can I get that track to playback simultaneously with the other eight?

As for that I recorded the rythm guitar part DI into the board and used the click track but there was still the residue.

When you add an audio track does it not add a channel to the mixer? You need to use the scroll bar to see them all.

As for the click, it should not record at all, on or off, unless you have a soundblaster type card with "what U Hear" or something set. Sounds like a soundcard settings issue to me.

No, I don't think you understand. In cubase, tracks and channels are almost the same. You have these things:
Audio Track - apears as horizontal bar with waveform in the main editing window, AND as a channel with the same name in the mixer window.
Midi Track - same here, except a MIDI channel is added to the mixer and the editing window does not show waveforms but key hights.
VST - when a VST instrument (or DX instrument for that matter) is assigned to a midi track, a VST channel is add to right of the mixer. It does not have a track, and can be used to run VST instruments through plugins, EQ etc.
Group Track - audio tracks can be assigned to this Group Track. In the editing window, now waveforms are shown, only the level of the group track. A group track works similar as an audio track in the way that it shows up as a channel in the mixer, and everything you apply to a group track (level changes, effects etc.) is applied to every audio track that is assigned to that group track.
Busses - don't need to tell you what these do.

So basicly, when you record something on track 1, that instantly goes through channel 1, and then the main bus(ses). When you record on track 2, it goes to channel 2 etc. Now the number of INPUTS that your soundcard kind of depends where something comes in. For instance, my soundcard as only 2 mono inputs. Track (and channel) 1 uses input 1, track 2 uses input 2, track 3 uses input 1, track 4 uses input 2 etc. It just keeps repeating like that. You can set what input should be linked to what track/channel by editing the track properties, and in the upper left corner of the track properties window, you can select which input(s) to use.

Hope that explains it. About the click noise, I have no clue what else it could be. The bleedthrough thing could still be it though, I've heard click sounds get picked up by my own electrical guitar aswell (very softly, but it was there).

Sorry, but I am still having a problem. First you should know that I am dealing exclusivley with audio tracks. When I hit ctrl+* to bring up the mixer for audio tracks there are only eight faders then the two master faders. I need more. On my arrangement window when I click to assign a track to a channel my choices are 1-8 and "any". I need more.

Now a few more questions. What does VST mean? What does the "any" mean on my choice for channels? How do I make a group track? What are busses?

Sorry to be such a nimrod but I am new to this. Thanks for all of your time.

p.s. I should mention that I am working on a US-224 interface.

Oops, I didn't realize that there was a difference between Cubase and Cubasis, which I have. Sorry I didn't mention that.

Ah, there ya go. We have cubasis at school, I really don't like it.

Try to simply assign more tracks to the same channel, it should work.

Help!

Hey, can anyone please tell me what the difference is between cubasis 5.0 and cubase? I recently just ordered cubasis 5.0 but have heared it is rubbish compared to cubase. In fact im pretty new to all of this, i just want to create a song with instruments and vocals using a computer so what do i do!?!

Thanks for all your help

Steph - Cubasis is the entry level version. It's not "rubbish", it just doesn't have the complexity and the features that Cubase does. This could be a good thing for a beginner. It will do what you want as you're just starting out - just take the time to read the manual and get to understand it, any problems just come back here and ask. (but do read the manual - Steinberg provide a good one).

Thanks garry!

hehehe ah ok fair enough, I will give it a try. Thanks for your help! :)

I don't have a clue!

Hey its steph again - already need more help! Do u control the VST instruments in Cubasis with a keyboard (the musical kind)???

Steph - The VSTi's need MIDI instructions which can come from a keyboard of the black and white variety through a MIDI link or the beige variety by inputting / editing notes through the MIDI editor in a sequencer. It will be clearer once you've read the book and played around with it.

By the way I just spotted you're new to this bbs - welcome.

Thanks just joined yesturday! Ive read the manual and done the tutorial and ive got most of it down, it just doesn't say anywhere how to control the VST instruments. I want to control them with a computer keyboard how do i do this? At the moment all i can record is pre-recorded patterns i.e. drum part 1...etc if this is all you can do with the VSTI's wouldn't that mean everyone would be creating really similar music?! Thanks for replying really appreciate it!
:)

OK Steph. Assign the output of a MIDI track to the VSTi of your choice. Double click on it to open the Key Editor. Use the pencil tool to draw in notes and it will play them on your VSTi. Hope this is in touch with what you want. It's a very tedious way to do it, most people use a MIDI controller keyboard to play stuff in instead.
