Cubase Problem with latency....I think?!

Hi there! I'm new to cubase and this forum, so I appologise now if this question seems really ignorant or out forum of style!

I've just started to play around with Cubase 5 VST for recording guitar and mixing in drum beats and other virtual instruments.

My problem is that I need to apply effects to the guitar work through cubase, but in real time..i.e as I play, rather than upon the wave after I lay it down raw.

My set up is a guitar plugged into an amp, which is connected via line-out to the line-in on my PC sound card, a SoundBlaster 1024 Live! The PC is highish spec (256Mb RAM, 800 MHz AMD Athlon, 20 Gb HD).

So, I've figured out how to map the in-put to the correct channel on the mixer, but under un-figured circumstances, when the guitar is played the sound emmits immediately from the speakers, but this is followed a fraction of a second later by a single echo!

Is this a so-called 'latency' problem?!

Any effect applied to the master channel is applied to the second-sound signal...i.e. with master set on phaser, any guitar sound comes out raw first then a fraction of a second later comes out with phaser!

Also, if the master volume is turned down, the input channel volume remains uneffected, but the echo goes!

The master volume only seems to have an effect on wav files imported into cubase (eg a drum loop).

I'm sorry if this all sounds completely naive! The thing is I just know cubase has the virsatility I need.....from what I've heard at least, so it would be extremely useful if anyone could shed light on what might be causing this problem!!!!

If there's anything else you need to know about my setup or the effects/uneffects of any tweaking I may have forgotted to mention just let me know!

I dont know if i understand you right but...

you want to add an effect in cubase in real time... not to record...

if that is right... then i dont know if that is possible...

because the sound goes in the line in then it goes to ways:
1: to the windows(if you have windows) mixer and then to the speakers(this way you dont get any effect)

2:to cubase where it goes thought all the EQ, effects and whatever... then out... but now you get an latency. Because it has to go a much longer way... i dont know how much latency you have, and i know it is annoying with even just a little...

if you want to remove it from the windows mixer then double click on the speaker in the down-right corner of you screen and remove the line in

if you want to remove when it goes through cubase then you have to go to options/audio/setup(i think) then, instead of tape type, chose global disable...

dont know if this will help you at all but... GOOD LUCK!!!
