Hey guys.

Just installed Cubase SE. The audio card levels (in/out) are great, but the recording levels in Cubase are VERY low. I have to yell (mic) to get a small reading in the Cubase levels.

Here's the setup:

input : Mic > RNP8380 mic preamp > Lynx L22 audio card > Cubase
output: L22 > Tannoy monitors

Since I am getting SOME signal I assume the inputs/outputs are correct. If I import and play a pre-recorded audio track I can shake the walls (apologies to anyone in the same apt building :))

It's "this" close to working. Someone save me. What can I try. :)
Thanks guys.

Hi, Roger...

You may have tried this already but.

1 - Open your card mixer and check the levels...
2 - Depending on how your mic pre is plugged in the card (line in/ mic in) you may wanna check the level for the corresponding input.
3 - If it's mic in, u may want to boost the signal; i.e.phantom power on, b/c mic signal may be very low.
4 - When u arm a track, and try recording, what kind of level does Cubase show?

Hope this helps. One thing for sure, u're getting 'some signal'; it's just very low. Signal flow can be tricky, my friend.

The card mixer levels (in and out) are great. It's the Cubase mixer level input that barely registers.

The mic is a Shure Beta 58A (dynamic) so not phantom powered.
(Just picked up a Rode K2 but want to make sure everything is proper before hooking it up.)

As I said, the card mixer shows great levels (approaching 0). The Cubase mixer recording levels are maxing around -30. So I know the signal is good up to the audio card. I'm guessing it's something in Cubase I'm missing. Been through the install and recording setup steps in the manual several times. Always the same results.

output: L22 > Tannoy monitors"

Just a thought, are the velocity default levels set low?

Hey skipper.

Be gentle with me. :) I'm not in front of my PC right now. Where would I find the Velocity Level settings?

FYI - I tried turning up the gain on the mic-pre. At +60 I am getting great levels in Cubase. I like things set pretty flat, seems to me +60 gain is a little high. Comments?

Thanks.

1. Make sure all your VST Inputs are enabled.
2. Check to make sure the VST Output levels are set and enabled.
3. Open your Mixer Channel for the track in Question and make sure you're not sending the signal to any outboard effect that may be "throttling" the signal.
4. Make sure you're trying to record a "Wave" file and not some other format.

If you load one of the Demo songs that came with Cubase will it play back at normal levels?

Hey Easto.

Inputs, outputs and effects are as expected (at least what I expect).

I tried importing an audio file from CD into Cubase. The neighbors can confirm that end of things is working fine.

I'll check the .Wav file format question (but I think this is ok).

Thanks.
Roger
