I am a 67 year old newbie who has just started using Cubase LE4 which came with my Tascam US-144. When I am using playback, the sound simply drops out. The only way to get it back is exit from the project and also exit from Cubase. I then reload Cubase and it is fine (for a short time e.g. ten minutes etc.) and then it happens again. Is there something which I am doing or not doing.

Well, your first problem is

Cubase LE4. I am a Cubase friend, and I know the software sucks,

That being said, you need to download the update as well as the hotfix. It must be done in the right order from HERE.

Do these steps before giving up. :) You will need to register at steinberg though....

Hi Jimmys69:

Very many thanks. I really appreciate it.

Does not look like it did. I am still having the same problem. In facf, I received a pop-up message (window) a couple of times stating that I had a a serious problem and should contact Steinberg. I have not done this yet.

I have uninstalled my Cubase LE4 and reinstalled it, plus downloaded the two updates. No improvement.
I have also written a detail to Steinberg and now await their reply. However, I have low expectations of success.

This would certainly put me off buying an upgrade.

What operating system are you using? There could be other things causing you problems. I had many issues with LE4, and have heard many others with the same issues. Mine stopped after purchasing an interface that came with LE5. Never had the 'Serious Problem' error message again. I now am a dedicated Cubase user. If LE5 had not come around, I would probably have jumped ship myself....

Hi Jimmys69:
My computer system is as follows:

Windows Vista Service Pack 2
Compaq computer Intel Pentium(R) Dual CPU 1.86 GHz
RAM 2.0 G
System type 32-bit.

When the audio drops out I unplug the Tascam US-144 USB connection and re-insert it. I do this when Cubase and the project are active. This works most times.
Also, when I have the audio problem, when I try to exit from Cubase it has a problem "Cubase not responding" message. If I click the exit icon (top RH red X button) a few times it eventually exits from Cubase.

Also, on trying to start a new project today Cubase refuses to give me a Mono track. When I ask for Mono I get Stereo. Also, with a guitar plugged in directly (and also a mic) I can clearly hear the audio through my headphones (via the US-144). However, there is no signal in Cubase. The mixer channels/sliders show no audio. However, if I try to add a Mono track to an existing project it delivers OK. If I had any hair I would pull it out!!

I remember the issues I had with LE4. I just do not remember what exactly fixed them (it has been a long time...).

Kind of sounding like a driver issue here. First off, have you downloaded the most up to date driver for your interface and OS? Get it HERE if you haven't.

Hi Jimmys69:

Many thanks for your patience with me !! I have downloaded the most recent (12-24 2009) driver from Tascam. However, it has downloaded to my 'Download' file. I do not know how to 'activate' it. When I unzipped it and click on it, it tries to open Windows Media Player which does not open properly.

So I am sticll stuck !!

There should be a exe file in there. What browser are you using? You should just be able to 'Save' the file, and double left click on it, to install.

I now have the drivers installed and I have not had any problems for since installation.
Very many thanks for your help.

I replied to this about 1 month ago, but it did not show in the forum ???
My system is now working fine since downloading the Tascam drivers.

Very many thanks for your invaluable help. Brian
