I am fairly new to using cubase. I know how to get my basic tracks down with no peaking ect. However I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on making the tracks sound better using inserts (effects) I need the most help with acoustic guitar and upright bass. All suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Can you explain what you're looking for when you say "better"? My impulse is to say your best bet is to focus on micing technique to get the best sound you can, rather than thinking about how you can make it better with inserts.

But my real answer would depend on what sound you're specifically looking for. If you can give more details, I may be able to answer better. (Granted, I'm no expert...)

A few inserts I tend to use a lot are the Multi-band compressor, Filter/Q (nice, adjustable parametric EQ), and the compressor under "Dynamics" (more efficient but less tweakable than the multi-band). But again, I use these to tweak a sound I'm already happy with.

SidChigger over on studiotrax.net might be able to help you - he uses Cubase and does bluegrass type music.

Learn how to use mics and position them.

Fix the sound BEFORE it goes on the tracks and you don't have to clean it up with plugins afterward.

There are LOTS of books out there on basic recording techniques....
