Cubase 4 and Drum Kit from Hell 2

Little Background:
I've been sequencing Drum Kit From Hell 2 in Fruity Loops then dumping down the drum parts section by section (i.e. snare, toms, etc) to separate wav files I bring into Cubase. In the zillions of free upgrades they messed up the real time rendering so FL will try and render a 3 minute tune as fast as it can which of course makes it die due to trying to seek all that directly from the disk.

So with that said - I've been told that Cubase's sequencer can do the same thing.

So my question is how?

I'm a hardcore computer science nerd (I'm a programmer & gamer) but I know nothing about VSTi etc, and there is a lack of tutorials on the subject available it seems.

How do I get Drum Kit From Hell in Cubase as an "instrument" so I can use it to sequence the drums with and then get them to wav files (assuming a simple export) I can re-import back in?

What I've tried so far -> I copied the DKFH2 .dll into the "C:\Program Files\Steinberg\Cubase 4\VSTPlugins" folder and I can sorta see that it is being "seen" by Cubase 4 but I have no idea what to do from there and if that is even correct - it seems doing it that way Cubase thinks it's an effect.

heh sounds like you're tryna make things more complicated than they are =p

i'm at work so i can't check where each option is specifically but this is the general process (btw i'm running cubase sx3 with Native Instruments Battery but it's essentially the same process).

first you hafta add DKFH as a VST instrument. there should be an option somewhere in the top tool bar called something like "VST connections" or "VST instruments". it should be pretty straightfoward. just point cubase to where you've got it saved.

next add a new MIDI track. this is what you'll be using to sequence

in the midi track you set the output to DKFH.

now just go into the midi track and start ploppin down your drum hits. it's helpful to make a template project with your drums an stuff setup so you don't hafta do this everytime.

i'll try post up more detailed info when i get home but you're a comp sci guy so i'm pretty sure you can figure it out. =)

Thanks a ton for the response!

I'm at work now too - but I'll give this a try when I get home tonight. I figured it had to be easier than the route I was headed - lol

I'll post tonight and let you know how it went.

Cool - I got it working thanks to all your help - it worked completely as far as loading / triggering etc but I couldn't hear anything even though the output was set for DKFH2 :-( - the step I was missing was the darn VST Audio System part in the Device Setup for Cubase. I hadn't ever used VST before in Cubase (even though I've had it for years) so it wasn't "enabled."

Thanks alot for your help :-)

cool :-)

glad i could help. i like cubase's sequencer. you'll find it's wayyy better than fruity loops
