Hello everyone... This is the drum track for one of our new songs. If you could listen this over and give me some tips on how I can mix it better and use eq and compression more effectively it would be great!

It was made with 7 tracks: Kick (pg52..I know it sucks.), snare (sm57), two overheads (mxl993s), two toms (sm58's) and a room mic (b1 condencer).

Thanks,

James

Nice job dude!
I like the natural reverb on the snare and the kick sounds good even if you'd use that mic!
I'd never micked a drum so I can't give you advices but I like result!

It sounds okay, but the snare doesnt sound too 'snare-ish'. It sounds more like a tom. Way too punchy in the mix and you can barely tell its a snare. The rest sounds pretty good though.

the snare sounds like a tom? hello??? sounds like a snare to me! :)

everything nice so far. but you can't tell how it'll sound in the mix.

ah yeah... maybe ad another room mic to get the reverb in stereo. on the other hand you will add some artificial reverb anyway.

Your song is only 14 seconds long? :D

Anyway, you can't make too many calls about mixing this without hearing the whole mix. The snare does sound a little funny to me, but who knows it might be perfect with the other instruments.

I agree, something is off with the snare. It sounds too low. Maybe try tuning it a bit higher??? It sounds like it could be more powerful with a tighter snare.

Not bad. They could probably be tuned up a little better. The tuning, room and drummer are most of the tone.

Not bad..

Doesn't sound like there's much isolation of each drum, but that may be intended. Might help to know the style of music. If this is lo-fi rock, jazz, or maybe hip hop, you are set. If your song is metal, folk, or country, I'm not loving it.

Everything sounds fine, except the snare sounds a little choked. Loosen up the snare bed and get a hard flat surface underneath to get the bottom head. Back up the kick mic to capture a little more boom.

Other than that, it sounds good. :)

mix update..

Hey guys,.
Thanks for the feedback. Here is an updated track. The style is rock/power pop...so I think this is the drum sound im trying to get...I had some compression on the snare so I took that off and I put a little more boom in the kick...

New mix

what are you asking for... if it's How do these Raw tracks sound?, then not bad. if it's I've EQ'd them for my mix, then there's a lot of work to do.

I like the snare on the first recording and the bass drum on the second one. The bass drum on the second recording has a better boom, but the snare sounds like it has a considerable mid-range scoop.

I dig the tom sound!

Also, maybe it's just the cymbals themselves, but the ride almost sounds as though it has some sort of rattle on it... Maybe it isn't as noticeable to other people. I hear it on both recordings, anyway.

I think it sounds pretty good. A tip (if you not allready have done it) is to look at the waveforms and edit/move all the tracks on the time line so that all miced drums match up exactly with the overhead tracks.

it sounds better than most of the drum tracks that I have to work with!
