My personal feeling is that you should do a whole lot more of research before you shell out $7,000.-

Seems that at this stage you really dont know what you want or need. I dont want to sound patronizing, but i got this feeling.

Check out rather inexpensive digital mixers (sub 1,000.-) w/ 2 or more ADAT outs and hook them up to multiple Terratecs 88Ds ... this way you can get full 24 digital channels for less than 1,500,-

that would be my advise

then can you please suggest something for a rap recording studio. I want really good sound quality that sounds like dre quality or somthing that sounds like it was mixed in a million dollar studio.

How about a request that's a little more realistic? :D Look, with what you know right now and what you can afford, the best you can really hope for is to be able to produce some demos with decent enough sound quality that won't embarrass you while you hone and refine your tracking/mixing skills.

There are reasons why Dre's stuff sounds as good as it does . . . and only a very small portion of it has to do with the kind of mixing desk used. If you want your stuff to sound like it was mixed at a million dollar studio, then mix it at a million dollar studio . . . or spend a few years interning at a million dollar studio so you can learn how it's done.

Don't bother trying to talk this noob out of parting with his hard earned cash--he's got that weird affliction called 'I can do it-itis' and thinks that with the right stuff--but no experience or knowledge--he can be making mad beatzz fo' da brothas.

Typical 15 year old attitude. Mouth is writing checks that his wallet and brains can never cash. :D

Maybe we should start at a more basic level. Do you know what a mic preamp is? You will need at least one of those. A big mixing console is going to have 32 or more preamps. If you are only recording a rap vocal over beats, you will probably only need a couple preamps. Start doing some research into preamps by using the search function on this message board.

Preamps have a big influence on whether you get that "high-dollar studio" sound or that "crappy garage band demo" sound. Mics are another big part of the equation. But if you are recording rap vocals, you will probably only need a couple mics to choose from.

After you have the mic and preamp thing figured out, then you need some way to record the signals coming from the mics and preamps. As you might guess, there are lots of options. The easiest and probably most popular method (among the home recording crowd) is recording digitally into your computer. But to do this you need a fast computer and a special sound card designed for recording. The sound card will come will some type of interface to allow you to connect cables from the mic preamp into the computer. Then the music gets recorded onto the hard drive in your computer. You will want a sound card with high-quality A/D converters to acheive that "high-dollar studio" sound. You will also need some type of software to multitrack/mix/edit etc.

That's just the basics. There are also tons of other things you may want/need like compressors, EQs, reverb units, effects processors, mic stands, pop filters, cables, CD burners, monitors, headphones, headphone amps, etc. And then if you want to create beats, you need all kinds of additional stuff that I know nothing about.

As you can see, there is lots of stuff to consider. I haven't even touched on the whole "knowing what the hell you are doing" factor-- which is the most important. So, before you go wasting a couple thousand dollars on a mixing console that you don't need, you may want to do some more research into what you will need and why.

as i mentioned ... digital mixer, cheap adat cards, OR ... as you mention rap ... you might go really cheap and get a ADA8000 and the Terratec adat card ... and a decent mic ... reason 2.5, the whole shebang... and spend a couple of 100 bucks in "recording" workshops.

Lets face it, this cheap stuff that i mention above is WAY SUPERIOR to - say - the equipment that Dire Strait used to record brothers in arms in `86...

you just need to get as good as the sound ingeneer that worked for Dire Strait :D

honestly, assuming you are pretty much a newbie in recording (so am i) a 7k studio will NOT sound better under your hands than a 1k studio.

Wow... makin' fly beatz eh? Pretty dope my homeslice! Getting that mad buzz in hizzouse wizzouw!

Here's a hint, because I work with rappers all the time and not one of them qualifies as a musician--learn to play an instrument. It will give you the MUSICAL basis required to make music. Not just 'hard ass' beats and some mumbly stupid rhymes about poppin' caps, platinum grills and your def ride (even though half these guys get dropped off at the studio by their mommies).

Rap... hahahhahahha..... what a joke.

If you wanna be a man pick up a guitar.

I take it that an educated discussion about the pros and cons of ADAT cards is not likely to take place anytime soon :D
