Thats amazing...I wish I had those chops now and I'm 10 years older than him

I always find these "virtuoso" kid videos disturbing. They always come off as puppets doing a routine. There was the Van Halen girl and another younger boy guitar video floating around on the net for quite some time. It makes you wonder if these kids really sought out to learn to play this well or did someone teach them one routine and have them play it over and over and over lol. This kid seems to have a much larger grasp of skills/playing than the previous ones i've seen. Too bad for him shredding is basically frowned upon now days lol.
True StoryI was at a party this past new years Eve at a friend of a friends house. They had some BS music blasting but through all the chaos I kept hearing what sounded like someone shredding. I eventually made my way torwards the back of the house looking for a bathroom only to find a 13 year old kid doing some serious shredding. He knew every Van Halen lick note for note and had loads of Satriani and Vai down as well. So i ended up spending most of the night jamming with this kid and it turned out that he barely could play chords, couldn't really tune/play by ear, and he had no clue how any of the stuff he knew fit together in terms of music. It was pretty crazy, despite all the raw skills that he had and the abillity to rip roaring leads at tornado speeds, he was a terrible guitarist. The video reminded me of that lol.

yea...i actually got the same idea. He seams he can just play really fast. Still outstanding nonetheless.

Fortunately (or unfortuantely), shredding and solos are coming back. They died out during the grunge/pop punk phase, but I'm hearing a lot more solos on the radio that aren't just power chords.

EDIT: When I say unfortuanately, I am referring to some cheesey 80s shredding that has no purpose in the context of the song. I do love my 80s music though :D .

Yeah that new Billy Idol song Scream has a solo in it.

This kid will be awesome when his nuts drop and he gets some soul.

yeah, except their all shitty solos by shitty guitarists. it's just drenched with wah and they're all int he pentatonic minor scale or some shit. I'm getting pretty sick of the wah pedal, and EVERY single solo on the radio today all use the wah pedal to cover up any potential shittiness.

I still think music is at its lowest.

It depends on where you're looking. I'm a metalhead who enjoys talented soloing and I've found quite a good selection from the European scene, although that is beginning to succumb to keyboards. Children of Bodom is shred solo band to be listening to, also includes amazing keyboard leads that dual guitar! If you dont' like the shredding check out some very soulful licks from Opeth, although it can get a bit dreary, but thats my thing.

Who knows, maybe someday he'll actually have something to say.

my answer to the "look at him, and he's only 8 years old!" thing is often, "well isn't it obvious?! he's 8 years old!" you have lots of time when you're 8 to practise. when you're a bit older (like 16!!! :p) you seem to need to do more, but don't have enough time *nods head wisely* .

heh, Opeth?

I'm an Opeth ADDICT. :D

i love scandinavian music. modern american music has gone down the toilet. the only american bands I listen to are Pantera, Slayer, Deftones, Tool, A Perfect Circle, and that's about it.

geez, i'm gonna get flamed for this, but I am an avid guitarist and would say music is no way at an all time low......it depends where you look.....there is so much more to playing guitar than real fast solos....so much more to music in general. I get frustrated with people that are like that, not that I don't like a good fast solo every now and then, but I'd rather have a guitar player who has a great feel for music than one who can shred alot.....

ps- i think your musical horizons should broaden a little from reading the only bands you listen to

I could never play what that kid played. But it doesn't matter because to me what he played was just a load of trash.

Clap, clap...

8 year olds, jerking off. Great.

Anyone got any clips of 8 year olds who like to play music and then throw some mustard on top? I'd enjoy that.

I applaud that the little bastards are doing something besides playing video games and hacking the FBI's mainframe though.

Past that, boring guitar playing is not improved by age or lack there of.

Despite if you don't like what he played, he definately has some skill.

Kids are getting better, younger and younger these days. Almost scary..

I would love to see if this kids really knows what he is playing, or if he has just memorized these licks and can play fast.

Skill nonetheless.

Yeah, that was some very fast - noise. Now that he can play notes, there's hope it might become- music.-Richie

I knew this was coming...

Here: WOW! I wish I could do 1/2 of that when I was 8! Or even now! That's super de duper dee doo!!! Hell, I couldn't even roadie for them kids! Wonderful! Encore!

Having said that, I have kids and we don't gush every time they spill paint on paper and move their fingers around in it and then hang it on the fridge and bring the neighbors over to marvel at the GENIUS in this blob or that swoosh. We encourage them, as I do these young guns, but we don't BS them and we don't offer patronizing praise.

They know that when they perfom well (actresses and singers) and I have a tear in my eye it's because they're good, not 'daddy's little girl'. They get frowns for poor timing or flat notes or any mistakes. Doing it is one thing, doing it right is another.

Fact is these kids aren't doing a whole hell of a lot and you can see the one already thinks he's the second coming. He's probably got some parent or pal who ignores his every misfretted note and flub. That does him no good.

They 'shine' and 'amaze' strictly through comparison that WAY to many kids, their peers, are not learning nor enjoying much of anything in the way of music.
