Sort of off the topic but considering computers are becoming more a part of our lives and recording I'll say anything from HP,I own all kinds of hp stuff cd burner,printer,monitor,tower,and 2 of there scanners.And guess what everyday something doesn't work right...:mad: I own two of there worthless scanners.They work the first time you connect them to your system than never again...:mad: :mad: I upgraded to windows xp and then found out my 4100c scanner is not compatible with xp , not that it was compatible with any previous O.S.So, I spend the $90.00 bucks and get the 2200c and walla it actually worked. NOT ANYMORE!!! See, I've got a primera signature IV printer and would like to be able to scan images onto cd's for certain projects. But of course my hp scanner will not work with my hp computer,go figure :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad:

Actually, I've played through some pretty decent Peavey guitar amps in the past.

They are very popular on the country circuit for the tone. My last one was a Bandit 110 I think.(?) It was several years ago.

The Peavey guitar amps have improved quite a bit over the years since the '80's.

I wouldn't go so far to say they could compete wth a Fender or Marshall, but they are decent amps.

Stay away from the mixers.
 
I have a peavey delta blues 210 amp which I use all the time on my recordings. Its a great amp.

Tell you what Chris, why don't you drag that NT-1 up on stage and sing in a rock band with it. Preferrably a band with a really loud drummer. Let's see if it blows away the SM-58 then!

Now, my point is that you compared apples with red meat. If you want to follow your thinking here, then of course all the Marshall mics are better than the SM-58. Why hell, I suppose that just about ANY LD Condenser mic will blow away a SM-58 IN THE STUDIO.:rolleyes: The SM-58 ISN'T A STUDIO VOCAL MIC!!! IT MAKES NO CLAIMS AT BEING A SUITABLE MIC FOR VOCAL RECORDINGS IN THE STUDIO!!!!!

Okay, I was tempted to just erase all the above after having a few sips of my morning coffee, but hey, no way! :) This was too ripe.

You know though Chris, everybody around here bashes the 3630 compressor, even though many around here have commented that they like tracks I have used it on while mixing, AND, that another studio owner who used to frequent this BBS who owns a rather large commercial studio facility in England endorsed it too. It goes with the territory. What is funny is I tried SO hard to resist responding to any thread that asked for a opinion about gear. I just can't help myself I suppose....:D

I agree with you that the NT1 and the SM58 are two entirely different beasts. That said, many people claim that, for many singers, nothing beats an SM58. I can't remember for sure, but I think I remember hearing that Robert Plant, Roger Daltry, and Paul Rodgers recorded through 58's (or 57's?).

My point, though, was simply that the NT1, being a microphone (obviously), is not deserving of the "crappiest gear of all time" award. I simply used my own experience as an example.

The AKG D80, on the other hand.... I can't seem to get it to sound good on ANYTHING!! (maybe it's broken :confused: )

No happy pills here. Don't believe I need that stuff to be happy thank God!

I think a microphone is definately something to be considered for the crappiest gear hall of fame. The microphone is probably the single most important piece of gear in the whole recording chain these days. With recording devices, preamps, converters, etc... getting much better, it usually comes down to the right microphone to capture the right sound that makes the difference in most productions. Without fail, the NT-1 has produced bad results I have heard. Really, if it didn't have all the pretention surrounding it, I wouldn't nominate it. But, that mic was pushed back in the day as being as good as most other LD mics around. Yeah right!

I hate to say it, but the NT-1 is another one of those things that could go either way.

If you were lucky enough to score one of the early ones (within the first few years of production), then you have what amounts to be a pretty decent mic.

If, however, you had the extreme misfortune of purchasing one of the latter models -- somewheres around the third year of production and after -- then you have what amounts to be a worthless piece of crap that deservedly belongs in the anals of crappy gear history.

Reason is Rode decided to change their capsules without informing (warning) the public ahead of time. Rode has a habbit of doing this. They come out with a good mic with good parts, then after the reviews and word-of-mouth spreads, they do a switcharoo on the parts and fill them with a lot of cheapie crap in order to save money, thinking we, the buying public, will be none the wiser. :D But we know better, don't we? :D

Are you still trying to use tweeters, as faithfull reproduction devises?

Let me know when it hits you, that tweeters are producing sound, not reproducing it!!

I owned my NT1 for an evening, before I returned it... along with my piece of shit, MP tube preamp. Dog doo piece of crap. However, I still own my mxl2001 that I paid $200 for when they first came out. Different strokes....

funny too how like Ed using the 3630 and getting decent comments, I've used my 2001 all the time and received same style comments too.

different ears......different beers...
 
It still, as always, comes down to the skill of the engineer being more of a factor than the quality of the tools. Am I surprised that Ed can get quality results out of the 3630? Not particularly. Although I might be surprised if he said he could find any constructive use for the gates on the damn thing.

But if it takes a Sonusman quality engineer to be able to eke something useful out of a box, perhaps it's not the best box for the rest of us.

Hell, I ought to send Ed my Oktava 219. He'll probably be able to make it sound like a U67!

The crappiest peice of gear in the studio is sometimes the dude or dudette sitting behind the board :)

I know its been the case a few times with some of my recordings.... wow.... someone crack a window :)

I hate my Fostex RD-8 ADAT (has built in Time Code functions). As far as crap for the buck, this soars above a Radio Shack Mic or Peavey Mixer. Paid (gulp) close to 4 Gs for it new. Within two years with light use the display became unreadable after the unit was on about 5 min. (make your choices quick), and... it started eating tapes. Sent it back to be repaired (lasted just long enough for the warranty to exspire). Paid money. Same problems within a month. I'll never get my money back (look what they're going for on ebay)... if it didn't cost me so much money I would smash it in a second.

I vote for my daughters "Barbie karaoke machine". Her "Kay" guitar sounds awful plugged into it.

Yep, that's the one. It still is beautiful (on the outside). Dig the line about "recently serviced at an authorized Alesis facility"... The sad fact is, if it's working at all, it HAD to be recently serviced. And in a couple of weeks it will need to be serviced again! :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek:
 
LOL!!!!! this thread is back, and I'm glad i had a look again....I had a good laugh at the "Alesis mixer comment" by littledog....good one..:D :D
