Will a decent pre-amp SIGNIFICANTLY improve the sound of the vocals if a crappy mic is used? Should a good mic be purchased first? For those who have bought a pre-amp to use with their BR studio how great was difference and what did you buy?
I bought a MCA SP1 from Musicians Friend for like $50 a few years back, and it was a BIG jump over the crappy $50 Shure dynamic mic that I bought a long time ago. I was using a Tascam US122 (about $150 on ebay) with the MCA mic, and it sounded a lot better than plugging that Shure mic directly into my SoundBlaster card.
