what is a good cowbell

im looking for a sound similar to

Free - All Right Now

cowbell in the intro

should i be looking into latin percussion for a good rock bell?

Just because they're called Latin Percussion doesn't mean they're not suited to rock! I have an LP cowbell that I dig. They have lots of different models, but generally a larger cowbell is gonna give you the tone you're looking for. A MoonGel placed inside is great for reducing the sustain if necessary.

Audition them if you can.

HUGE cowbells aren't cool :(

I have 3 cowbells, two are LP and 4" and 6" i think.. and then i have a HUGE un-named one that is about 10".

10" ones aren't nice, they're loud and nasty sound.. well my on is anyway.

Auditioning cowbells... hahaha :D (but it is what needs to be done)

You, know... As soon as I saw this, I thought the same thing the rest of you thought... the difference is I'm willing to actually come out and say it...

So you've got a fever, and you need more cowbell, eh?

I like that Free song, by the way :) Good luck trying out cowbells.

Damn

I wanted a t-shirt. Guess it's time to make my own.

I recorded this song with a band once but i cant find the cd i will try again though.

I got a sound near on exactly the same with a 6" Dixon cowbell.

The one the Free drummer used wasn't a big one cos its quite high pitched with a short decay on it, I am guessing it was a 6" or maybe an 8" one, but try the Dixon ones, they are good and would suit the sound your after i think :)

What I used to use For a Cow Bell (Or Just a Bell) is one of those Big Red Fire alarm bells that they Have in School Fire alarms...They Have an awesome High Pitched Bell Sound that is Really Distinctive and it Cuts right through the Music.....

I have actually used quite a few Odd Objects on my Kit Like I used to have a Stop Sign that I hammered into a Cymbal Type Shape and Drilled a Hole through it and Mounted it on a Stand...It has a sort of a China Type sound but different and very Unique, It actually Sounds a Bit like a Car Crash when I hit it......

I also Made my Own China Type Crash Cymbal, what I did was Take a 13 in Hi-Hat cymbal and Pushed in in the Middle so it turned unside out and then did the Same with a 16 in Cheapo Crash and then Mounted the 13 On top of the 16 in with a Thick rubber washer between them and Put them on a Stand and it sounds Very Good ,Better than any China I have ever heard and I can get a Variety of sounds out of Depending if I hit Just one of the Cymbals or Both at the Same Time or seperately......

I think it is Great to Experiment with new Instruments and Sounds this way....

Cheers
