Triple M - I hear all those things you mentioned.. I think I'm slipping Triplage! I am not happy with these vocals.. Thanks for getting in there early.. you were the first ears.. stay critical! :)

M.Brane - right on! I agree that the vocals should have been sung with more balls.. also, it is long over due that I have to start using real bass again.. thanks Brane!

David - thanks man! If you mean pot smoke, I hear ya!

twist - thanks twist.. basically, I took the easy way out!

fprod south - mixmkr's version was very cool.. I kinda just stripped it down, and drowned it in effects.. thanks man!

Jagular - thanks Jag! I just hacked it.. mixmkr's original version probably took a lot more time than this.. it had a lot more detail than I gave it..

TROLL! - LMAO rick! :D That is a great user name! appreciate the word.. 'childhood games' got a lot of good feedback from my buddies over here.. thanks for letting me do it!

Doug H - thanks for the ears!!

Analytical Man - I agree about the snare and the vocal comment.. Although the pitch was not an 'effect.' It was a harmony.. Either way, I think the vocals are pretty weak.. the guitar is just a lot of effects.. thanks A-Man!

Toki 987 - thanks Toke! I agree the snare is a bit much.. I have to stop mixing the drums so loud.. Maybe it's a habit because drums was my first instrument..

Kramer - lol! No, I didn't mean for the drums to suck! :D I agree though.. they didn't come out as planned.. thanks Krame!!

darwinsdoggy - I agree about the intro sounding thin.. thanks for checking it out!

Stratomaster - I'll be sending you a p.m. shortly..

Guernica - I'm really taking a beating for that snare!! :D It wasn't until I started reading the comments that I realized everyone was right.. I'm moving into a new place soon, and I'll be setting things up a lot differently.. hopefully somethings will improve in the new place.. I did some different things with the guitar sound.. I processed them with an effect called 'dogshit!' :D I did too much of this in one day and I guess several things got by me.. Vocal chain was SM 58 into Digitech V-300, into a Blue Max compressor (vocal preset 3).. I took out some low mids like you guys have been suggesting for awhile, and I added more 788 compression.. Check out the Digitech vocal 300 link at the top of the page.. thanks Mike! looking forward to hearing some heavy G!

Cranky One - I am really getting my ass kicked about the drums!! :D Yeah the intro was fake.. I put up links to all the gear I use at the top of the page.. If it wasn't for effects, my guitar playing would sound much worse! Your due for a new song.. :D thanks Crank!!!

scottboyher - all guitars direct.. For this song I tuned to drop C#.. I did one guitar track J-Station, one Pod Pro, and added some accents with a Sansamp Tri A.C. All the solos were Pod Pro.. All the guitars and vocals went through a Blue Max compressor.. I put up links to all the crap used at the top of the page.. thanks for checking it out scott..

SLuiCe - email in 20!

powderfinger - my ass has been thoroughly kicked about the drums! :D If you have any suggestions on production, I would love to hear them.. I'm always open for suggestions man.. thanks powder!

flat-9 - I never try to stream anymore.. I just download to the desktop and then erase right after.. thanks for trying!

dudes, I really appreciate the time.. May as well let this thread die to make room.. I have learned much from you once again..

thanks!!!!!!!!

Isn't that supposed to read-
"thread proceeds to commit samicide":D

Sorry about the bump dude,I just havn't been around much to listen.

Great cover Sam,I like the opening when it hits at 00:30.
Is that the E-bow in the beggining?

Man that little guitar riff at 00:53,woa!
Smokin!
Now that's what I call an intro!:D

Your vocals sounded very good,I like to hear you solo though.

Great hook!

Another big,warm,full recording.
Your guitar playing gets better with every song.
It rocked,as always!

I wanted to ask you, everybody seems to be using a 176 setting with Lame.

I went back to using VBR,looks like the way to go listening to everybodys stuff.

But I don't have a 176 setting on my version of Lame.
Just 160 or 192.
My version is 1.1.5.1342,was there a later version?

Do you have to set the General bitrate setting and the VBR bitrate setting the same, for it to work right?

I think mabey I had it set up wrong?

You can PM me if you have a chance.

Thanks,
Pete

The one thing production wise that I can guarantee I'd do on most of your tunes is to let the vocals come through and sing. They are always significantly burried. Not burried in the sense of an amateur losing his vocals in the bass and mids (we know that doesn't happen to you), but burried in the sense of a guy that makes great production and deliberately wants to cover up his vocals a bit with effects and distortions:D.

You've done cleaner vocals before (it's been within the past few weeks) and they were great.

It reminds me of the story about Wilco's last album (you might not be a fan, as they are spectrums away from the likes of sabbath). They had gone overboard on clutter and effects during recording, and gave it to Sonic Youth's producer (O'Rourke I believe) to mix it, expecting to get back some crazy concoction. When they got it back, had had removed almost all the clutter away...........and that's what I would do w/ your vocals if I had my hands on them :D.

Smokin guitar, man. The strings are a tad to analogue and gritty for me but maybe you wanted that 'bite' for this tune. The ostinato, albeit is great. Super sweep into the body of the tune. Full recording. Smooth transitions between sections except at 4:00, it was much to abrupt and could have used a little more dovetailing from the previous synth and guitar parts. Possibly a slower fade that lasts to 4:03 would be all you need as the entering sawtooth melody, (d ), is the 9 of the C powerchord and would blend warmly. (to bad a 'flat-9' wouldnt work here, nyuck nyuk)
Lost Pilot deserves to have a smoother landing (ending.)
GREAT COVER of this tune!

peace,

scuze me for being so absent. I have made a couple of quickie posts otherwheres...and always wanted to say something here, but got called away...whatever. Really pressed for time lately, but believe me, I have been really enjoying hearing what you did. This is a first for me (having a cover done of one of my tunes), so I am "relishing" it.

Upon first listen, the first thing I wanted to do, was a cover of your version, of this version!!:D ...but then it would probably just sound like the original..

There are some things I REALLY like, and some things are just ok for me....but there are not really many in this department. Nothing I would call bad. (ha!)

First off...about the music. I think you updated the song, and I like that very much. I think your version is much more contemporary, and kicks more booty. I also like the liberties you took on changing some things, and the flow of the song works for me. What is completely cool to me is when the song kicks in at 1:19. You took your power chords and did the "old man chant" from the original, and that made for a good kick butt groove. The D to A vamp... I also noticed that you kept the same key. ..but pulled it off with drop tuning. That added a new feel in itself too.

Production wise, no real complaints. Vocals pop thru good, and it is weird hearing the lyrics over this [different song?...version?], but totally cool on my end. I am not much a lyrics guy, but these sounded familiar!

Musically, the cellos in the beginning sounded a little MIDI to me, and the choir wasn't the best ones you've seemed to use in the past. I think it maybe because the blend with the choir, with other instruments, is different...if you used the same patch in the past. However, I liked it very much. Very musical. Around :32, it sounds a little tinny, and the lead is a little tinny sounding too, but the hammer on's are just the icing... just great. BUT>>, it DOES serve to really set up the song when you kick in (1:19). I actually like the snare and the kick. I am really used to drum machine sounds (and at times really prefer them sometimes), and they actually are reminicient of the sound I always tried to get out of a real kit in the 80's... a good smacking kick and a whappy snare...without so much sizzle on the snare....something with a defined pitch. The leads are great, but the sound is average as compared to the rest of the song... the tinny, thin sound I was alluding to earlier.

I think you took enough liberties that the song IS significantly different, but my wife recognized it right off (somehow!!??), even before the lyrics came in. She loved it ...as did I.

I know I had a bunch more to say, will probably pop back in and add some, but thanks so much Sam. I was really sitting on the edge of my chair waiting for this, and I really appreciate you taking the time to do it. I think Fenderlikingod and I are two blown away gtr players who feel like something cool just happened, but it's hard to explain.

Again, major apologies for arriving late...but, you know how that goes... or maybe you don't!!... But YOU KNOW, I wasn't about to NOT comment. That would make me an extreme dickhead...even for as nice a guy I am!!!

thanksij!!

a couple other thoughts...while I am still sitting here typing.

this version is having a really good effect on me, and making me want to really concentrate more on my metal-head roots, and get back into that more. And I thank you for that. I'd like to do some stuff and incorporate (aka ripoff!!) some of the techniques and stuff that you do... Go for that wall of sound gtr pillage.

One thing that might have helped your version (but only in my mind I suppose....like if you were paying me to be producer!!! Ha!) ..would be to have some more "spacy-ier" sounding synth sounds in the intro and the ending too. More new-agish ear candy for a lack of better words. NOT John Tesh!! mind you... but something more "of other worlds".

The synth patch at the end section could have possibly been less involved, as you gtr is just blowing the smoke out of the chimney on top of it...right up to the end. Maybe a 'Jmarcoumb' Triton sound or a SluCie "special" patch would do it. Something that is "out of the way" of your guitar and fills the low end (the really low end) and the (really high) end.

Anyway...I feel I am just busting with things to say, but seem to forget them when I want to type them.

what a Rush..
