Hi everyone:
I haven't written the lyrics for this yet, but I'd like to get some ears on the mix so far.
Lets see if I am getting anywhere with drum sounds.
What about the bass??

sounds great...good guitar sound. The only area I would point out is the snare kind of way out back if you know what I mean, and somewhat boring...how about some crazy fills man

Ohhhhhhh Yeaahhhhh!
Now you know I'm all over this stuff. Wankology at its finest. Oh yes - the drums - you asked about the drums. Rhythmically fine - almost a choo-choo beat. The snare's a bit dominant - actually more than a bit. It's hiding some of that fine Merle Travis rhythm and I'm sure it'll cover your vocal. The hi-hat sounds nice and that light crash sounds pretty good, too. The splash sounds artificial. The placement suits me just fine (as do the rest of the instruments in the mix.) OK - that's the drums - now on to the important stuff!! If it were me - I'd let the bass sustain just a little longer so it lingers on 'one' and pushes the beat. The lead part is freekin' lovely! Have you heard Brent Mason? Some artfully applied compression will make those lead tone midranges snap in you face. ( I don't know how or how much - but you're reallllllly close.) Excellent playing - it's like a lesson on country-blues riffing - you've covered most every possible combination. Very smoooth. Tones nice and full. Is this direct or mic'd amp? It's real country blues - every time I hear one of your tunes I want to run right up to the studio and grab the Strat! This one's gonna be niiiiiiice!! Great to have you playing again!!

Hey Dan - that's definitely tamed but now I think you'll have to wait until the vocals ar added to do any more tweaking. I get criticized for having my drums too low in the mix so I don't want to get carried away and say they're still too loud. The rhythm guitar might be a litle hot at times, too, but once again I think with the vocals added the whole sound will change - especially depending on how hot they are. The bass even sounds a little fuller now. The lines are fine.
The guitar playing is sweet - I'm gonna take this to the studio and try to learn some of them thar licks!!

Wicked stuff! I loved your guitar chops on this one. Definitely some of your finest playing I have heard to date.
I can't wait to hear this with vocals on it!
I have only listened to the second mix and everything sounds very smooth and balanced on it so, I think I will reserve judgment till I hear it with the vox and then we will know better what instruments need to come up or down to support the lyrics.
Where's the Harp??
You gotta put some harmonica in this!

That is some fine guitar work. I love that style of guitar pickin'.

The only suggestion that i would make is that your chord changes are in all the correct places.....on most country blues the chord change come a measure or 2 behind where it should be (according to other genres of music)
Alot of those old country blues cats like Son Thomas and Fred Mcdowell would chages there vocals as if the music switched chords in the proper place, but the actual; chord change came a measure later.
It wasn't that those guys didn't know when to change chords...its part of the art form. There are still a few old school cats that play around Clarksdale that I listen to sometimes.....they are old and when they die it will be a lost art form.

Yeah, I hear what you're meaning with the drums but I think you might want to go for a more grace note/roll kinda thing. Not each note the same velocity.
Mix seems ok. I like the fat bluesy bass sound. It's funny, with some styles a little mud is fine. Great performance too.

Nice sounds you have here. Sounds like a good start. Sounds ready for Johnny Cash (if he were still here
) to sing on top especially in the beginning. Snare sounded maybe a little loud up until the change at 1:09 (nice!).
I agree with Ped about changing the velocity and/or even the pitch a hair if you could on the snare "roll". A drummer would be using two sticks hitting two separate parts of the snare producing slightly different sounds. I don't program drums but something to think about. Otherwise I liked the drums sounds you got.
Bass may be a little undefined but I would wait until the vocals are laid down to see how things are sitting. I actually would do that regarding the snare volume as well.

Pick'n and grin'n
Sounds pretty good. Kind of Chet Atkins meets Merle Travis. The snare is not right- too much. The pickin' is very good. Nice playing over all. Good tune, now get some lyrics in there.

Cool start. I loved the feel. Nice guitar sounds and nice playing. Liked that lead guit.
The lead break might be a little long. But maybe it just seemed long because there were no words.
The drums are pretty mechanical. The snare is a little busy.
I think the bass is fine. It's not the centerpiece of the song, but then it shouldn't be. Let those twangy guitars shine. The bass is fine where it is.
<edit> something weird at 3:55 and 4:02. Like somebody threw a drumstick and hit a mic.

Wow, Hevy - your recording skills are really coming along. This is by far the best-sounding mix I've heard from you yet. Nice and balanced-sounding. Really cool groove.
A suggestion on the drums: it's that little double-tap on the snare that sounds the most "mechanical". I'd lose that and just keep a straight 4/4. Not as interesting, true - but with fake drums I think it's better to go a little less interesting sometimes in the interest of not calling attention to the fakeness.
Can't wait to hear the lyrics.

I just checked out the song with the vocal added. I was kind of expecting to hear you singing on this too as that might fill out the tune a bit better by getting a duet thing going where you trade lines back and forth.
Her singing is good but it's lacking a bit of growl to it. Also it's probably a db too hot in the mix right now.
As for harp, I think Groucho would be the right man for the job there. I never claimed to be a harmonica player and until I stop smoking, I don't think I ever will be.

Well, I had a rare day off today and I needed to just holler and grunt for awhile, so I put on Hevy's tune and sang the first tune that popped into my head.
