Couldn't get the guitarist up to speed fast enough, so I'm reamping live.

Exported a stereo track, one side is the click (fed to me the drummer for this gig) and the other is the dry guitar track. That will be feed via laptop through an interface to a reamp box that will run into my mesa DR half stack.

I'm actually pretty stoked to try this setup. I'm going to use a copy of Reaper because I don't want to gig my cubase dongle.

The obvious drawback is not having a person playing the parts. But some of the pluses that come to mind are:

1. no feedback issues.
2. less noise.
3. the guitar parts are pre recorded and thus perfect.

Anyhow, I'm sure the guitarist will be up to snuff for future stuff. We didn't want to back out of the gig though.

So you're doing a gig with no guitar player? Or he is gonna fake play? WTF?

I have done stuff with a click track to a drumber live to allow for midi tracks to come in at the proper spot.

IF you can play to the track without missing a single beat it'll be fine.
However out of 5 really good drumbers I tried it with, only one was able to do so.

It's mostly a matter of hearing the click over a live band volume. That click's gotta be loud 'cause as soon as you miss a single count it's trainwreck city.

So is the guitarist going to mime his part?

Playing to MIDI is one thing... but playing a prerecorded guitar part and using a guitarist as a prop is something else.

Eh... I think not having the guitarist present at the gig is the lesser of two evils. Either way, tread carefully, as I'm not convinced this will add to your bands credibility, that is unless you want to become the local hit comedy act.

But it does sound like an interesting technical setup.

Guitarists are props anyway. Stand em up, plug em in, and threaten them with violence if they fuck up.

Sincerely,
Drummers

Oh yeah?

Well what's the difference between a drummer and a saving's bond?

One will eventually mature and make money! :D

(If you've heard that one before then sorry... I heard it for the first time the other day and thought it was pretty clever)

I'm confident with it. At this point I have gotten so used to a click track that I'm not comfortable without it.

I've obviously tested this setup and practiced with it. It would be a giant clusterfuck if I didn't.
