Could anyone mix this for me?

Amandas has the least sibilance...

he has to be pretty chuffed at what folks have achieved here....

now who's adding bass? :)

btw to the OP...dont worry about the pop filter just now, sound like you are using a dynamic mic anyway...

ask around here before your folks go and buy you equipment for your birthday...stick up a thread in the newbie section and members will help you get the most out of your budget...starting off needn't be the most expensive thing and its sound like you have the talent to get going pretty quickly :)

Hmm, I think I will give this a try too, sometime. I guess I'll take the same road mike did and just go even further. At least Im gonna replace those strings.. and probably end up once again with 50 tracks and a messy mix. :p

Here is my mix:

Didn't (at least yet) start adding drums or too much other stuff, so it's mostly just your tracks mixed.

Any comments are welcome.

And here comes my final mix with added drums and bass and so on:

I think it's actually worth listening. :)

Edit2:
Things ive done to the original tracks, if someones interested (without going to details):
-Noise removal using voxendo redunoise (free)
-Some compression on both guitars and vocals (including some analog tube modelling)
-Automated EQ
-Automated volume
-Automatic Double Tracking using guitar rig 4 for guitars and vocals
-"reversed pre reverb" on strummed guitar at start
-reverbs, delays, tremolo on picked guitar...
-fixed some timings on vocals, de-esser, midi controlled pitch correction

If any real mixing engineers would like to pass constructive criticism on what I've done, I'd really appreciate it.

Well, im not a real mixing engineer but my points anyway:
- The effect on vocal track sound far too loud to me, it is disturbing and should be much more subtle in my opinion.
- The strummed guitar which is played and recorded beter (IMO) is slightly masked by the other guitar. I would probably use more panning at least.
- The mix is too static. Nothing happens in it.
- Noise removal works well.
- It is quite well balanced.

Edit:
And if someone else also happens to be also willing to hear some constructive criticism here you go.

Mr Clean:
-Quite nice, a bit distant and dull sound on guitars. Vocals work well.

Timkroeger:
-Guitars have a nice full sound, maybe a little bit bass heavy.
-There is some hiss, but after the start it is quite unnoticeable
-Guitars are slightly overpowering the vocals.

rockonin:
-Far too much hiss
-Mix is very boomy
-Vocal harmonies were a nice idea, but they work well only in some places. The last ones were nice, though maybe a bit too loud.

iblametheocean:
-the sound is overally quite distant and dull, probably because of noise reduction.
-otherwise ok

Lo-Fi Mike:
-The drums and bass are a nice add, though EZ Drummer sound quite synthy to me.
-Hiss level is a bit disturbing
-I think it lacks some bass
-I assume you didn't use too much time so a relatively professional outcome.

LDS:
-Noise reduction causes too much artifacts to the vocals
-Otherwise a nice mix

I'm at work right now so I'm working from memory here, but I did downlod your tracks and worked with them a bit.

I'm not a professional audio engineer, but if I were mixing this for a fee I would request that you re-record the tracks.............and here's why!

There's a LOT of background noise in these tracks so the majority of what I was trying to do when I fooled with them is repair work, which shouldn't be necessary. Especially with such a sparse mix, every little noise will stick out like a sore thumb.

There's a lot of hum on the vocal track and fairly loud hum at that. Removing it in the mix is difficult to do without affecting the general quality of the vocals which aren't badly sung at all.

The very first lyrics on the track are distorted because your plosives are so loud. So turn it down a bit, and pull your head back from the mic some.

From a musical standpoint, you don't have any bass or any percussion so your rhythm has to come from somewhere else. In this case it would probably be the acoustic chords you've got going. I can tell you played them to a click track because they keep a constant rhythm, but they jump around in some places. So I would re-record those and try to get them as as rock solid as you can, no effects, just good rhythmic chords. Also if you double track them (record them twice and try to get them to line up as closely as you can possibly manage) that will give some options for stereo mixing. The finger picked guitar is your expressive part. It's not too bad here, but I think again you could turn the gain down a bit and work really hard to get it to click in time with those chords.

And the backup vocals don't need the effects on them. Just record them clean and leave the options for effects for the mixing.

Lastly, the pads (strings) sound okay, but they repeat over and over and over. If you can change them up slightly here and there it will give the appearance of movement throughout the song. A repetetive pattern like that will eventually become boring to listen to, so chordal changes and melodic movement with those will give that track a little more character.

Now I know that was a whole crap-ton of criticism but I HOPE that you'll see it's just constructive. The song is good, your voice works and the guitar is good enough, but I have no doubt that if you set your mind to it you could record them a little more clean and more in time, most of the problems here are recording issues, not mixing ones. Spend some time to fix some of the issues the people here have mentioned and repost with new tracks and we can surely squeeze a better mix out of it!

I sincerely hope that helps. :)

most of the problems here are recording issues, not mixing ones.
I would slightly disagree in that they can be solved in mixing too, to some extent, but agree strongly in that
1) they are a lot easier to solve in recording stage and
2) even with great mixing (and a LOT of time used) the final outcome can not be nearly as good as it could have been with better recorded tracks.
So yes, spend some money for better equipment. If you spend it wisely, you don't even have to pay much and still get much better recordings. :)

Guilty as charged, I'm a guitarist ;) ...and still getting acquainted to my monitors.

Thanks for your feedback!

Cheers
Tim

Hi

I realise I only have post but I was wondering if anyone could mix my cover of 9 crimes by Damien Rice for me? - Here is the link to all the tracks in wav format - http://www.sendspace.com/file/pmr46r - thanks in advance

George

check out my version of your song,

Look at your post man. The object embedding for the soundcould player isn't working. Just post the link to the soundcloud page...

Here's my quickie

Thought I'd give it a quick go of it;

http://www.box.net/shared/xida8lgcja

I applied;
DC off set removal as needed
De-esser and EQ to the Vox as well as too much reverb
Spatial expander to the Vox Back
EQ and panning to the guitars
and a little compression and EQing to the master buss

Please feel free to comment...I look forward to it.

Here is my quick mix

Turned out ok.

Vocals were tough to mix because they are so low and almost wispery...I could always raise volume on vocals or add some type of exciter...I think an exciter plug would help or perhaps saturation or distortion.

Good song though...nice job.

I like what you did with the guitar...down right soothing...nice noise removal and the strings came out nicely balanced as well. The vocals (I agree were a bit tough to work with) have a little "boomy-ness" to them but that has a lot to do with mic placement I think.

Over-all nice mix, getting to listen to yours gave me a little something to compare to. I learned a little something today. Thanks for sharing.
