Being new here, I don't want to be insensitive to the rules in place and I certainly don't want to intrude. My reading of the material on the boilerplate and user agreement page left me with ambivalent feelings, since this is not an advertisement, solicitation or spam. It is in the way of a news item or industry bulletin, concerning the world of microphones.

Perhaps a moderator can read this and direct me to the correct forum, or the door, or put out a welcome mat. All of the above will be cheerfully accepted with no hard feelings.

OK. Here's the story. A microphone designer of world renown, based in Los Angeles (some of you already know who I mean) is currently accepting applications for an intern/apprentice position. I am a fan of the man's work, no more, no less. If I have a mercenary interest, it is this: someday I hope to have a microphone with his, and ONLY his name on it, and I believe the art of recording can only benefit from its creation.

I would like to mention the email address where persons interested in exploring the opportunity might respond, but I will not do so until and unless a moderator or administrator here says it is OK.

Thank you !

You Could Email Recording Engineer directly, or just go ahead and have us email you for the address.

I dont think its spam or they would have contacted you by now.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will email Recording Engineer.

In My Humble Opinion...

Personally, I feel ANYTHING, whether it be general or specific, which has to do with microphones, microphone techniques, or even microphone/preamp combos, or ANY other information that somwhat remotely relates to microphones, that is of benefit to the industry as a whole or even to one fellow artist in the industry who will use that benefit with the intent of giving back to the industry as a whole or another fellow artist, ought to be allowed to post here in this forum.

How's about THAT for a sentence? :D

Hell RE, that sentence is WIDE OPEN for interpretation, not that I'm objecting......lol.

"Please note that commercial messages, advertisements, spam, chain letters, spam, pyramid schemes, spam, solicitations, spam, spam, spam, and spam are inappropriate material to post on this BBS. Posting links to your outside web pages, where the motivation is judged to be solely or largely to drive up your page views or for monetary interest, is also against the rules. Posting off-topic material (for instance, talking about sex in the Tascam forum) is both annoying and against the rules. Posting the same thing in multiple forums is also considered a no-no...please figure out where it belongs first. "

It seems that "that sentence" contridicts the above statement.....my opinion only......

RE,I think your statement makes perfect sense.I have not seen "spam" to be an issue.I find myself much more annoyed by the repeated accussations of spam.I think that this whole issue is blown out of proportion.Sometimes it takes on a semblance of a witch hunt.

i think his statement makes perfect sense....but when you let one do it, you have to let all do it....sooner or later this will be one big advertisement BBS and people will say shit like, "hey, remember when that homerecording.com bbs was actually about recording?...that WAS a cool place..."......

Geez, we are making a big deal over a minor point. It is very relevant to this forum and a hell of an opportunity for somebody. It's not exactly a secret either. Stephen Paul is looking for an apprentice/assistant. If you're really interested in learning a lot more than you ever realized about mic design, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity to work for an incredible mic designer.

Stephen is an amazing individual, but be warned - the job won't be easy; long hours, low pay, hard work, but the chance to be part of that team is a golden opportunity for someone whose looking to spend the rest of his life designing mics. Anyone who establishes a reputation working with Stephen Paul will be able to go to any mic company and be considered as a valued member.

If I were 45 years younger, I'd probably do it in a heartbeat. I think the main requirements are a passion for microphones, attention to detail, and learning how to keep your mouth shut.

Stephen asked people in his forum to spread the word, and that's what Robert is trying to do here. I'm not the moderator here, but I'm sure Weston wouldn't consider this job opportunity announcement "spam". It's certainly relevant to this mic forum.

Hey Harvey...

I know this is irrellevant to microphones and all, but what kind of car does Stephen Paul drive?

My guess is that he either has a bicycle with a basket on the front (circa 1959) or drives a 1969 Karmann Ghia.

Do you know?

Do you own a Ferrari?
I think you'd look great in a Ferrari or Porsche! ;)

Gidge: The quote you pasted was precisely what gave me pause.

RE: Your response was unequivocal and your placement of commas, in the classic style, was, in my opinion, refreshing and downright literary.

Harvey: 45 years too late? Maybe, maybe not, but pal, I am as tempted as you are. Imagine being the one selected to peek into the sorcerer's toolbox, open his book of incantations, follow his personal instruction, and watch the magic dance! Not that it will start that way. Hard work? Um hum.

Buck: I don't know if Stephen Paul drives any more. His physical burden is more than most of us could possibly fathom. But I know one thing: anybody who gets in the way of his mike project is in danger of being run over! Even with his pain and illness, he is a man with a mission on this.

Everybody: And that is why I'm nosing into your forum. From what I have read and learned, there is exactly one guy on the planet who can take a sub-micron membrane and attach it to 1930s physics and make it work. One. Nobody else will admit to even having tried it, although I am sure they have.

Throughout the time that Stephen has developed his art, he has painted on other people's canvas -- AKG, Neumann and the like -- flawed as they are. An authority no less than Klaus Heyne said it flat out: The reason the Teutonic mikes are so expensive is that you are buying one kapsul in 6 that is worth a pfennig but you are paying for the other 5!! Klaus calls their best technology "happ-hazard" (sic). I think he and Stephen agree.

So when Stephen mentioned to the folks in his forum that he was contemplating an all-new microphone that would incorporate the best he could offer, we all got excited, and planned to mortgage our own bikes and Karmann Ghias. THEN, he began talking about it at a price point that anybody with a Lawson L47 would JUMP AT! Instant mike fever.

A wise(guy) old rec exec once said, " Sure, yoozeguys c'n doowit in-na STOODIO.. but canya put dis on-na ROAD? "

I can't read the man's mind, but I got a feeling Steven thinks he CAN do a monster microphone with major magic and do a whole lot better than 1 out of 6! That equals uniform quality and that equals efficiency and that equals affordability, quid pro quo. And you could count on it. If it didn't work right, you would NEVER EVER see one. Harvey, am I right?

Then guess who gets to buy one? And keep the car, and therefore the wife? Everybody, that's who.

The man is Stephen Paul. If you are interested in applying for his intern/apprentice position, email him at:

root@spaudio.com

Thanks, RE.
Thanks, Harvey.

Think about this. It could change your life -- and everybody's records. Wow.

Actually, I did have that pleasure of watching Stephen work on my mics at his house a number of years ago. Like watching a virtuoso pianist play, and realizing that you yourself will always be a hack. It was a very humbling experience

Stephen has dreamed about making his own microphone for many years. I'm glad I was able to play a small part of making Stephen's dream a reality.

You're absolutely right.

A lot of people on this forum seem to regard me as some kind of mic guru. It reminds me of an old Norse legend that was turned into a folk song:

In the land of Odin,
There stands a mountain,
One thousand miles in the air.

From edge to edge,
This mountain
Is one thousand miles square.

Once every thousand years,
A little bird comes winging,
To sharpen his beak on the mountain,
And quickly flies away.

Thus when this mountain,
Is finally worn away,
This, to eternity, shall be,
As one single day.

I am the bird, Stephen Paul is the mountain.

No sex in the Tascam forum, hell you guys are no fun.

Gidge: Some spam is ok, just heat it up and serve it on toast, personally I find the posts accusing people of spamming are not only more annoying but are taking up ten times as much bandwidth.

Too, bad he isnt located in KC. Ill Have to pass on this oppertunity. but good luck to any of you who apply, personally I hope one of us does get it.

Unfortunately, the overly paranoid "spam-police" here at HR.com are giving this site a negative reputation at some other forums on the net.

It is getting to the point where if a person mentions one particular brand of mic, they are at risk of being accused of being on the payroll of that company..............this repeated behavioural response from the same people has become tiresome, offensive, boring and most likely worst of all DETRIMENTAL to HR.com.

I said something very similar in another post. My sentiments exactly!

Yeah, what ausrock said too.

If I were 15-20 years younger I'd apply too. What a great opportunity.
:p

Love that poem/song Harvey! One of my fav's!

It's kinda heart-warming, Harvey, to be reminded that you remain a true folkie at heart, up there in So Cal with your double-bass in the days before the Beatles. Perhaps especially so, since those of us who've been fortunate enough to meet you in more recent times know you as that guy that records metal bands at his place in a cow pasture north of Denton.
