Now you see, if you were a real man .. like, for example, me, you'd have plugged it in to something, ANYTHING, and played it until the excitement of the purchase had died down. Then you'd have stuck changing the wiring on your to-do list and got round to it in five or six months. :)

You want an fugly guitar? Look at the all-gold strat. That thing is an actual "strat" and man, that motherfucker could use a Jerry Springer makeover like there no tomorrow!

Actually I liked that one too :o Except I don't like Strat electronics.

Technically, the So-Cal is not labeled by Fender as a Strat, which it really isn't.

Oh man! You mean the Gold 50th Anneversary Strat? That thing is the Bees Knees, man! Sweet!

I really don't know about modding an obvious collector guitar like the SolCal strat, though. That immediately put a hurtin' on its value. I would either play it or put it away. Modding it will certainly make it worth less down the road though, even VS a guitar that has been played to death (but stock).
That said, I dig the SolCal too :-D

It ain't a Custom Shop model, it's a $600 Korean job. I just can't see anybody coughing up big money for it. And besides, modding it makes it worth MORE to me, and I'm the one that counts

True, true. Very true and a point well taken.
My point is that it IS a collector guitar, though.
Hell, half of my collection was made in Chicago in the 1960s (Kay, Harm) and that hasn't stopped them from going up in value!

Still a nice guitar. Good luch with the mods. :D

Jamal, there's no accounting for taste. I, for one, would never give someone unsigned negative rep because they have different taste than me. But- that is one butt-ugly guitar. Aside from that, being a psychedelic folk-rocker, I would never have any use for a solid body without a neck pickup. Putting a humbucker on a Fender is like dressing Dolly Parton in Goth.-Richie

Not sure if it helps, but I almost bought a pink paisley Tele in the '80s :o

Well I'm rather taken with my So-Cal. I finished the pickup today, I now have a 5K ohm humbucker that gives a nice sound somewhat unlike any guitar I've owned. It's somewhat generic, bright like a single coil, but not too bright, sort of like the active pickup tone without the sterile feeling actives have.

I've changed the pot to a pull-pot, and after some playing around, I'm going to make the switch a low-cut instead of series/parallel, so I can get a real bright sound without losing level.

I've put a sticker on it to emphasize the surf nature of the guitar. It still needs setup work, I haven't bothered since I will be changing the bridge and nut soon.

I only have one major decision left: should I put a chickenhead knob on the thing? I'm thinking yes, but I am looking for even cooler knob suggestions. It only has one knob, so let's get crazy!

I will be posting audio samples tonight. :)

I think I'd like a chicken head knob that actually looked like a realistic chicken head, but nobody makes one that I can find :(

I would gig with that guitar

So I could smash it at the end of the show.

That is one f-ugly guitar.
