from what i hear they are the same thing but adobe audition is the newer versions ..is this correct? i have cool edit pro 2 and i was wondering what the differences between that and adobe audition are...and it its worth upgrading to audition? also how is cubase?

Syntrillium developed Cool Edit Pro, in which guise it went through several versions. I started with 1.2, which rapidly became 2.0, then 2.1, whereupon Adobe bought them out and reissued CEP 2.1 with altered graphics as Adobe Audition 1.0. The current version is 1.5.

Do you need to upgrade? Good question. 1.5 has features designed to integrate with graphics (probably why Adobe wanted it in the first place) but each release gets better and more stable. The earlier CEP was designed to run on marginal computers, but the later versions take advantage of more modern hardware development.

I still have 1.2, and 2.0 is still loaded on my computer, but I'd hate to give up some of the features of 1.5...although I could easily record just as well with 1.2 as with 1.5, if it came to that.

One BIG difference is that 1.5 requires XP...but XP is so much more stable than 98SE (that I started with) that I don't mind. My 98SE machine fried, as a matter of fact, and a local IT guy told me I was foolish to continue putting off XP, so I went with it, and I'm very glad I did. I ended up converting my other computer to XP a little later.

I can easily record 8 in and play back 8 out (I very seldom go any higher in track count, unless I've got somebody who wants to save lots of alternate tracks).

Any other questions?

1.5 also works great on Windows 2000

I didn't know that. But then, I don't know any Win2000 users either.

Don't know if you can compare it to cubase. I stopped at version 1.2a and there midi was non-exsistent. There was added a bit of midi functionality, but CEP/AA is foremost an audio editor. It's midi capabilities are minimal.

The earlier CEP was designed to run on marginal computers

CEP was designed to run on a marginal OS: windows. So it has excellent recovery for crashes of the OS.

LOL. I haven't had a crash in a year and a half now, with XP, so maybe they hired some Apple people.

I went from CEP1.1 to Audition 1.5. I love it. It's more program than ProTools LE, but less than ProTools. It's not a $99 program, but it's not a $3000 program, either, ya know? Very very good indeed for the buck.

Audition is an extemely important part of my studio mainly due to ease of use.

I can get done what I need to very quickly.

I really like the Group-Waveform Normalize feature, to make sure all my song on a CD are going to gel-together okays volume wise.

Admittedly, I have killed some recordings by applying way too much hard limiting and compression though, but that's my fault and not the programs.

Matt
