Converting Mp3 to lower grade for upload

Hi there. Not sure if this is in the right area but...Some will remember that some time ago I mastered (pun intended) the recording of my music on a Tascam DP-01FX. Then I converted the songs to Mp3. Then I wanted to upload to a website selling these songs and that is where I encountered the big problem (to me anyway - not techno friendly!). They wanted a lower grade version still in Mp3 but for streaming - listening to only. I asked the website how to do it and got nowhere. I asked another website and got nowhere. One of these websites was so helpful they asked me to send an Mp3 to them and they would send me back a couple of examples of the lower grade song. They did but my software removed the attachments!! How cute!

So, can anyone help please? Obviously I would prefer software which is free rather than have to pay.

What I find so confusing is that these software packages can do a million things with your Mp3 but all I need is to convert to a lower grade version of the song file.

I don't know what software you're using, but when you finish your song and you're ready to convert it to MP3, simply choose a lower bit rate. Most sites that stream would probably only allow you to upload no higher than 128kps. Whatever software or MP3 converter you're using will give you that option.
 
When doing a lower bitrate version, always encode from the original (uncompressed) master rather than the higher-quality MP3. This way you get the "highest-quality" low quality MP3 possible. Otherwise if you transcode from lossy to lossy then you can introduce loads of artifacts and the quality will be even lower.
