Hi ds1... wow, I think I have a new favourite here. Again, I've lined everything up in CoolEdit and I can solo one after another for comparison. The biggest thing I notice between yours and others is the snare treatment, it sounds very much alive and present while making the others seem somewhat dull in comparison. Care to share your method?

Another thing, whatever it is you did, you brought the cymbal work up in the mix and it makes some of the others sound quite stuffy by comparison. Did you boost the highs on the overheads to bring them out? It really livens things up! The only thing I wonder is if it might sound a little "closer" if there were less reverb on the kick. Overall maybe it's a bit mid-rangy, but right now I can't tell if the other mixes were dull or if this one is exceptionally bright. Anyone else give this one a listen?

Also, I think the kick track disappears at just after the 5:00 mark.
 
Thanks for the complement, I find that just because you have all these tracks doesn't mean they all gell togather, so the first things I did was find out if the room mic was really needed (seeing as it's mono it will just narrow the stereo field, which for me only means a less dynamic and open sound). The other thing to check is of course the phasing of the snare, reversing the phase made the snare brighter and more present, it sounds fuller left alone but I decided on the former. Yeah I think I did it a little too much on the boost of the overheads,the rest is just cutting out freq. and compression:
bass left flat
snare highpass @ 200
Toms highpass @ 149 and lowpass around 8000 plus compression
overheads highpass @ 450 and boost @ 14.4k

seperate sends to reverb (I played around with the parameters till satisfied)

then everything going though a buss with some final eq then some final compression and finaly a limiter.

I've moved my stuff recently and the acoustics are really bad, I have to do something about that, so yeah the over all sound might not be the best (mid rangy)
 
wow..those audix's did terrible on those toms

what sort of preamps and positioning and levels were used?

it seems like your mics were made out of paper cups and string and your preamp was a cardboard box.

the snare sounds like a walmart keyboard.

i started to do this..and then lost interest...bah

Haven't really mixed anything for a while so I thought to give this one a shot. This one is really just a fast draft. Also, as stated above, it is really near impossible to mix drums alone - without the the song around it. Anyways I went to quite "raw" sound on this one. Might have as well gone to pretty much any other direction too :)

btw I didn't run the "mix" throught any severe limiter so you might want to push the volume up a bit from your monitors while listening to this one ;)

weird i downloaded the whole thing... if you have winamp copy and paste the addy in the location, press ctrl L or if you use windows media press CTRL +U and do the same.

Hey error5i, I got your mix here and lined it up with the other 6 (7 total.. wow!). I think the kick drum sounds quite gated and processed. Care to share what you did? It almost has a techno "bump" sound to it as rock "thud" (if that makes any sense). I think that all around, the kick drum is so prominent that it kinda stands out on it's own, and maybe it detracts a bit. Maybe someone else would care to comment... maybe it's just my ears.

So far, I've got kainz and ds21 at the top of my list, and I'm having a really hard time picking between the two. ds21 is slightly more "live", maybe more present on the top end, but there's something going on with the snare that I can't quite put my finger on. Is it too present? kainz's is just a bit darker, maybe a bit more soft around the edges, particularly in the snare treatment.

Anyone else notice this between these two?

We're recording the bass lines tomorrow and I'll be sure to post them up (I think I've got enough space on my server to post .wav and .mp3 versions).
 
WOO! Get bass up tomorrow so I can post what I've done. I wish I had drumagog for that snare.

Well, we tracked bass for 5 of our 10 songs tonight, and wouldn't ya know it, "Something To Believe" wasn't one of them :) It was supposed to be, though. It has this tricky tapping part during instrumental breakdown (after the fast high-hat section, during a guitar/synth unison thing), and we thought it would be best if we invested the better part of a couple days on the last 5 songs getting all the tricky parts nailed down.
 
Oh, no big deal. That's certainly understandable. I don't wanna post what I did to the drums until I can work bass in amongst the kick though. Good luck when it does come time to record that bass! I can't wait to hear it. I love tapping.
 
No, it is not. I think most of us are waiting for bass. Your mix isn't bad, btw, Simman. I'd need to listen with rested ears to make any kind of recommendations.

Thanks...I quickly mixed this at home (on home PC), not in my studio. The mix is made up of 1 track kick and the rest is various (3) copies of the overheads run through SSL 4000 plug-ins. This is the first chance I got to use them and they are very cool. :)
 
Thanks everyone for being so supportive (and patient) with this. The different number of ideas I've seen here so far is going to go MILES (or kilometers I guess for us north of the 49th) in helping us get just the right mix for the album.

The band has scheduled September 30th and October 1st to track the bass the guitars. The vocals and keys will be recorded over the 2 weeks following that (most likey October 14th as Canadian Thanksgiving is the weekend of October 7th). The other 5 bass tracks were scheduled to be done this weekend but one of us has a family funeral to attend.
