If you go on the premise, from the Christian thread, that by definition religious music has to have religious lyrics, then you can actually make an argument that Black Sabbath wrote pro-religious music:

From "After Forever" on Master of Reality

Have you ever thought about your soul - can it be saved?
Or perhaps you think that when you're dead you just stay in your grave
Is God just a thought within your head or is he a part of you?
Is Christ just a name that you read in a book when you were in school?

When you think about death do you lose your breath or do you keep your cool?
Would you like to see the Pope on the end of a rope - do you think he's a fool?
Well I have seen the truth, yes I've seen the light and I've changed my ways
And I'll be prepared when you're lonely and scared at the end of our days

Could it be you're afraid of what your friends might say
If they knew you believe in God above?
They should realize before they criticize
that God is the only way to love

Is your mind so small that you have to fall
In with the pack wherever they run
Will you still sneer when death is near
And say they may as well worship the sun?

I think it was true it was people like you that crucified Christ
I think it is sad the opinion you had was the only one voiced
Will you be so sure when your day is near, say you don't believe?
You had the chance but you turned it down, now you can't retrieve

Perhaps you'll think before you say that God is dead and gone
Open your eyes, just realize that he's the one
The only one who can save you now from all this sin and hate
Or will you still jeer at all you hear? Yes! I think it's too late.

Of course, you may not be a fan of this song, which keeps you on your streak, but it's not even remotely shitty IMO

That's from Black Sabbath? That is absolutely amazing.

What are their other lyrics like?? :D

Most of the Ozzy years ranged from dark imagery (more as in the telling of a horror story as opposed to professing love for Satan), going crazy, armageddon, and drug abuse. Many times his lyrics actually carried a positive meaning, one excellent example being the last verse of "National Acrobat" off Sabbath Bloody Sabbath:

Just remember love is life
And hate is living death
Treat your life for what its worth
And live for every breath
Looking back Ive lived and learned
But now Im wondering
Here I wait and only guess
What this next life will bring

The post Ozzy years were largely based around the style of the vocalist, Dio's typically being dorky dungeons and dragons, and Gillan about being a rockstar, with the exception of "Disturbing the Priest", which again was more for the horror effect.

I remember back in jr high, we all flipped over "Iron Man".....we didn't give a hoot about trying to hear the words, we just wanted to know how they got the guitar to sound like that. That was before any solid state amps were affordable, and everyone wanted to know where to buy something called a "Distortion pedal"....

CooooL! Those lyrics totally change my impression of Black Sabbath.

about black sabbath-----you can't judge a book by its cover..........i know i know.....some one had to use that line:)

i thought the grateful dead was a metal band when i was in grade school cuz the name....:(

i can't remember for sure, but wasn't mortification a "white metal" band? sounded like cannibal but preached the "good word"

the whole idea of a "good" christian rock band doesn't sit well with me .....i was forced to listen to PETRA when i was younger cuz my dad wanted to become a preacher...that didn't last long:D

To be honest, I've heard that Sabbath song a million times, and heard and hummed with the lyrics. And It has never even crossed my mind that they "should" be odd in anyway...

I, mean, those dudes wore crosses the right way around, not upsidedown. Sabbath IMO never appeared in any Satanist way.. just drugged. :D

Awesome tune from one of the heaviest Metal records of all time...and from the guys that invented Metal!

'Lord of this World' from that album is sort of similar, excepting it's talking about Satan ruling the world since Eve's little 'operation', etc.

I'm about the biggest Sabbath fan EVER! ...years ago, I was in a Sabbath 'tribute' band (sorta), and we had a 'friend/groupie' that at first was SO against all our music, because Sabbath were a bunch of Devil Worshipers (she had 'issues' growing up in a household that held Satanic Services, etc), anyway...I 'let' her read Geezer's lyrics in 'After Forever'....it forever shut her the fuck up! :D

Hey, did you know the JS Bach used to help out street kids - boys specifically? It was his attempt at Good Work!
He didn't run a soup kitchen or anything that modern.
He tried to give them skills to get by with.
He set up a choir, not exactly a Van the Man & His Street Choir but of it's time musically & philanthropically.
They became the forerunner of the Vienna Boys' Choir. Being that it involved JS he had to hang his label on it to obtain some kudos & probably some indulgence etc. It appears he tagged them...
The Bach Street Boys.
Sorry!
Black Sabbath are THE metal band just as Budgie are THE hard rock band & Slade are THE Glam Rock/Pop band.

What do you think it is about the Norwegian psyche that attracts them to the Dark Side of music?

.
They've been around too long and have tried everything else. It's just evilution...get it? Give the US another 1000 years - we'll all be sick perverted satanist robots...oh wait, we already are...nevermind.

In my experience, Norway has just as many happy-go-lucky christians as anywhere else, possibly more. Infact I'd even go as far to say that real norwegian black metal is more popular outside of Norway than in Norway itself.

They're a strange old bunch, Norwegians.

Close My Eyes Forever

I've heard this song on the radio for years and years and never knew who it was until just a few months ago. Despite the seemingly shallow message in the lyrics, it is a very well written song. And the hook line speaks quite elegantly to the most fundamental question that all of us, CC and DW alike, are curious about....

"If I close my eyes forever, Would it all remain the same?"

It really is a great song.

Bottom line is that if you gig in bars, people are going to leave if you suck. No one will walk out of a church service

thats because they can see the last person who tried to leave nailed to a cross at the front near the alter !!!

fear keep the masses in control !!

only joking before i get persicuted :D

Hmmmmmmmm,....Devil Worship? Do you dig the music ,..or do you actually dig the Devil. I ain't never met him,......but they say he's a dick.

Neither. I only offer this thread as an antithesis to the bible-totin' going on in the "other" thread.

Ooooooh, another anonymous red fundie chicklet!

I love it, bring it on! :D

I wear your red chicklet like a tampon of honor! :D
