Consumer MD recorders

I am looking for a portable recorder for MDs. I have a shelf unit and a portable player but I can't record on the go. I want to be able to sample real world noises (such as trains, car noise, public chatter) and I also might use it occasionally to tape bands I am working with. I was wondering which unit has any recomendations and what mic to use, since most have stereo 1/8" jack for mic input.

Yo Mike:

I have a musician friend who uses some type of Sony mini disc "stereo" recorder to cut tunes live while he is on a gig. I've heard some of his results which he produces through a PC -- pretty good sounds. You might check out the Sony models on the net or elsewhere on this site.
