So i just bought a new interface, a tascam us-800 usb interface. I wasn't even thinking about this when I bought it. On the interface, the outs are stereo rca outs. I only have balanced xlr, and unbalanced 1/4" on my monitors. How do I hook my monitors up to my new interface. What kind of cable do I need more or less I guess.

Are your monitors powered or unpowered? (I'd guess powered, based on the connections you tell us are there- but I can't be sure.)

If powered/active monitors- get adapters or adapter cables- RCA to TS/unbalanced 1/4"
If unpowered- you need a power amp, too.

Yeah, they are active monitors. I assumed that I would need unbalanced rca to 1/4" cables.

It's the same cable I use from my interface to my monitors. I am going from Tape Out but should be the same.

Do you happen to know what s/dif is? by the by. It is a 8 analog interface, 6 xlr's, with s/dif. I am guessing that if I hook up a 2 xlr mic pre through s/dif that I can get an addictional two pre's? Am I correct on that?

s/pdif is a digital input (Sony Philips Digital Interface). In other words, your interface has no D/A converter for this input, but is available to record separate tracks to. Yes, a preamp with digital (s/pdif) out would work. ART DPS II is the cheapest 2 channel pre I think of off the top of my head.

Thanks for the reminder. I just grabbed a new one off Ebay for $209. :D

An Art DPS II ? damn man I need some mad money to get me some SM7B + preamp + new PA AMP :p

It's just a pre that I can use to run the digital inputs on the Tascam for scratch tracks. Need all 16 next weekend and my baby (X73) is on hold for a bit. I did buy another 4 bundles of Roxul 80 after seeing your treatments. Local supplier here has it 4" thickness now. Gonna throw together a 'how to' myself with a combination of corner bead and wood back frame. Control room ceiling cloud and iso room treated this round. I want to get rid of my purple Auralex above drums. I'd be happy to send it to ya. Would look cool in your room. :D

That's what I was considering getting. I thought those ART pre's are pretty excellent for the price.

Not so sure I would consider them excellent. Usable in most situations, yes. The singer from FFDP, did a demo for one of his previous bands in a studio I was working in. The high end preamps were being used for a mixdown at the time, so the only option was a DPSII that wasn't being used. It sounded amazing on his voice with a 58. It really depends on what and who it is being used on.

I actually meant to buy a DPSII and accidentally purchased a TPSII. Now I will have both to compare I suppose.
