im a newbie to some of this..im going to buy a condenser mic..
should i just buy a pre amp with usb or should a buy just a pre amp?
if i buy just a regular pre amp, how do i get it to the computer? through a soundcard? mixeR?

You could get an interface that has preamp built into it, or you can connect a preamp directly to an interface or soundcard, assuming your soundcard has the right connectors.

to record sound to your computer you need a soundcard and software. buy this from a music store NOT a computer store. you also need a pre-amp. a very good entry level system would be an mbox 2 from digidesign. it has everything you need to get started, a) it's a soundcard, b) it comes with pro tools software for recording (make sure of this before you buy it) and c) it has a built in mic pre amp. and the best part is they aren't that expensive, maybe a few hundred bucks.

Two resources you need:

First off, immediately get a good beginner recording book (spend $20 before spending hundred$/thousand$) that shows you what you need to get started and how to hook everything up in your studio--
Home Recording for Musicians by Jeff Strong - $15
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/07...ce&n=283155&n=507846&s=books&v=glance
(Wish I'd had that when I started; would have saved me lots of money and time and grief)

Good Newbie guides that also explains all the basics--
