Connecting a Toft ATB 16 to Macbook Pro

Hello everybody,

I'm kinda new in the recording-hobby. And I broke my head just over one simple question.

What is the best (not cheapest) way to connect a TOFT ATB 16 In-Line Mixing Console to a Macbook Pro running Logic.

I Would think: Console (recording) => Inteface => Pc => Interface => Console (mixing)

Just give me as much possibilties as possible please!

You need a (FireWire, I would assume) interface with perhaps 24 I/O.

If there is such a thing, I have no idea. That's a lot to ask of a laptop.

Three 828s (the FireWire version, NOT the USB version), perhaps. That said, you might run into a bandwidth reservation wall, depending on how they have things set up, in which case you'd have to use a FireWire ExpressCard card to get you an additional bus. I don't -think- 24 would be a problem (assuming you disable all ADAT and S/PDIF I/O), but I could be wrong. The most I've ever done off one bus is 16 because my other 8 are on a device that just plain doesn't work reliably unless it is by itself on a bus (M-Audio FW1814).

A SINGLE 828mkIII and 2 8 channel ADAT converters (e.g. 2 MOTU 8Pres)would get the job done.
So would an RME FF800 and the same 2 ADAT converters.

Mains, headphones, auxiliary sends, mults, etc., etc., etc.

As soon as you have as many as you think you need, you have about two thirds of what you require.

Depends on the intent. If the intent is to use the mixer as a bunch of pres, all you need are three 8Pre interfaces and you're done.

If the intent is to use them via a channel insert and feed the outputs back into independent board channels for out-of-the-box mixing, you need 16 outs plus ideally a couple of extra inputs for recording the mix without repatching things and a separate headphone output for listening to the result. For that, two 828s is the bare minimum because you would need 16 outputs.

It all depends on how you want to use this setup. That said, I got the 24 channel thing from the second post without bothering to see what the mixer actually was. You're probably right that 16 I/O would be sufficient.
