Hey,

I tried to connect my M-AUDIO KEYRIG 25 to Cubase 5 in order to record Synth and Bass Guitar. I followed the steps in a YouTube video:
Cubase 5 tutorial: Midi recording - YouTube

When she wants me to Install Device, my Device doesn't show up and I have to "Define New" Device... This however, she doesn't explain and it turned out being a bit harder than I expected.

Can someone tell me how to do it right?

I managed to Define a new Device, named it M-AUDIO and I didn't check any preferences, I just left it the way it was.

Then I followed her step with creating a MIDI Channel, tested the signal and there WAS signal.

Then I created a Audio Channel and was eager to hear the sound from my Device, but no luck there...

So if anyone knows where I went wrong I'd be SO grateful!

Thanks!

P.S. I installed the Driver from M-AUDIO's website and it should be fine... It shows up (I think) in Device Setup (MIDI Port Setup).

Here is a picture showing my MIDI Port Setup. I believe the M-AUDIO is the top 2 ins and outs right?

What are you using to generate the audio?? You need a Synth or VSTi in Cubase. You can assign one of the VSTi's that come with Cubase to test out your connections.

Remember, MIDI isn't Audio, it's just data.

--> Chili

Sorry, I couldn't really understand you - I'm quite new to these things, I followed the video I posted and did nothing else.

I have a M-Audio Keyrig 25 Synthesizer that connects to my computer via USB, if that's what you wondered. I have some Synth plugins as well, but not sure how to use them.

Would be very helpful if you could explain a little more so that I know what I need to change in :)

Thanks!

Go to Devices>VST Instruments and select a Synth or VSTi to one of the available slots. Not sure what version of Cubase you have, but you should have at least 2 slots, I believe. Here I'm using EZDrummer, but it works the same for all VSTi's.

Then go to the MIDI track in question and select that synth or VSTi. Your MIDI data should then drive the Synth and you should hear audio.

--> Chili,

I did as you told me, and I can see signal coming from the "MIDI In Acitvity" but I hear no sound, the MIDI channel shows activity as well.

To be clear - look at the last pic Chili posted.
1) Select your midi channel
2) Choose the right midi input from the left (this is where Chili has "E-DSP midi port C000")
3) Choose the correct output (in the picture "1 - ezdrummer"). This is your synth.

Usually when you create new instrument the program asks if you want to make a new midi channel also. If you agree it should connect the midi channel directly to you instrument channel and you may have to check the midi input only.

Thanks Seidy, for the confirmation. Isivaa, I suggest you put up some screenshots so we can see what you have going on. Use a photo editor to shrink them down to a manageable size. It's difficult to find the right size that fits in a post but still gives enough details to be useful so maybe host them at a free site like Photobucket.

Hey guys,

I really appreciate you're helping me, thanks alot!

Here are some screen shots of what's happening! Hope it may help us solve this!

You can try something more simple instead of loopmash... just a random synth to make sure it's working.

It should make sound now. If it doesn't then open up mixer (F3) and check the synth and master channel levels. And make sure mute and solo buttons are not pressed. Oh and check direct monitoring button too, you MAY have to turn it on to play live with keyboard.

It shows activity, but I don't see any data in the Midi track. Are you sure you are recording the midi data. Maybe the data is hidden out of sight, but verify you actually have data in your midi track. It should look like this:

Thanks alot for your help! After some more experimenting I've actually managed to get the thing to work! :)

I'm really grateful for your help and thanks for taking your time!
