Hi there!

I was searching around for a Vocal mic for my homestudio, and I have just 100 € (120 USD) budget for it.

My options seems to be:

Samson C-01 --> 51 € (60 USD)
CAD GXL-2200 --> 58 €
CAD GXL-1200 --> 77 € (small diafragm)
Marshal MXL 990 --> 85 € (shockmount included and hard plastic case)
Behringer B-5 --> 86 €
Behringer B-1 --> 94 €
Samson C-03 --> 100 € (120 USD)

I´ve heard CAD GXL-1200 and it gives a sufficient quality, but I want the better mic I can have for the money. and... yes I´ve been thinking about second hand.. but I wouldnt buy something like a mic, in second hand/mouth!

Also I would some help with Pre-Amp and sound card, but I will see if I find the right threads for that first, if not.. I´ll come back here and ask for that too. :)

I'd say go with the Studio Projects B-1. Most people like it and its only $100.

thanks for answers but...

The mic´s I wrote are those I can find in my country (Spain).

The Studio Projects B-1 arent so cheap here... 135 USD (without shockmount or anything) and to this I should add postage costs to spain (the store is in France)

going to any phisical shop in Spain, would be kind of stupid, cause there the prices are higher... example: Cad GXL-1200 costs in internet 77€ and in a music-store (phisical store)... about 129 €! almost double as much.

So thats why, I have to choose between those I mentioned in the first post... and I know where to get them (online) and the postage would be 0 € (free)

I'm still relatively new to mics and recording, but I just picked up the MXL990 and so far I really like it. Taking into consideration that it comes with the shockmount, it may easily be the best bargain of the ones you've listed.
:)

From your list, I would go with the MXL or the CAD. Either of those will outshine the others on your list....

Thanx!

Then I will go for the MXL 990, and try it out!

The worst that can happen is that I dont like it, and have to sell it on spanish ebay for 5 euros off the price I pay! :) (cause in stores they are more expensive so...)

Then I would try to get the Studio Project B-1 from France or even UK :D

Let´s see what happen. and I will post here as soon as I have it, and test it.

thanx again for your time.

So you can get an MXL 990 but you can't get an MXL V67? I would pick a V67 over the 990 if you can get it, but I'd pick the 990 over the others on your list.

Jacob

jkorura: no way I can get the MXL V67 from any online shop here in spain. I guess I could get one from a physically store.. but then again.. prices would be almost double as they should. (I wont pay overpriced, cause then I could get better ones online)

normalizer: Yes, the one I heard was very nice too (I think it was the GXL-1200), but I guess it has a lot of importance what soundcard it was using for recording too. (I dont know wich one)

Dude for $100 dollars us you can get an M-audio nova and your vocals will sound great. My friend tracks with one and it is incredible for the money. Very shinny and bright but full if eq'd correctly. I recomend it.

Mics

I've never used a Nova, but pro audio forum consensus seems they are kinda noisy and gritty compared to other mics in the same range.

I've heard good things about the B1 and the V67, although I've never used either of those.

I've had a few from the Samson line, and they too are a bit noisy. Most mics in the less than $100 range have a high noise floor, a tubby low end, a hyped tinny high end, and weak-ish mids.

Paired up with a really good mic pre any of these mics should be good sounding.

thatbobguy8 : Dude for $100 dollars us you can get an M-audio nova

What preamp does your friend use?

Common people! understand me.. when I tell you that prices here in Spain (europe) are kind of expensive in musical equipment!..

Dude! --> M-Audio Nova costs 137 Euro.. thats 165 USD!!! <-- so it´s not in the price range Im telling ya! and then again +10 euro = 12 USD for postage costs, so it would be a total of 177 USD! <-- and thats more on the 200 $ class! and not the 100$

I wish I coud get a Rode or Audio Technica... but Im not a rich bastard, so I have to find lowest possible prices, cause apart of the mic, I need also the mic stand, a soundcard (audiophile 2496), Pre-amp or mixer with phantom, cables, a keyboard (maybe M-Audio PC-50 if I find it and can see the price somewhere.. in europe), etc.. etc... like a valentin gift for my girlfriend!

Pre-amp?... I think he used mobile pre.... or audiophile usb, cant remember.

Don't buy from the UK the prices are terrible here. Buy from Germany!! You can get a SP B1 with shockmount, pop shield and bag here for 98 euros. I don't know how much delivery will be but it is a fixed delivery charge no matter how much you buy. So buy from them if you're buying lots of things at once. I got mic stands from there for £6-£7 and they're fine. That's 9.90 euros. It's 95 euros for the audiophile 2496. 6m Mic leads for 4.90 euro. There's a bunch of m-audio keyboards to choose from.

I got £400+ worth of things including stage monitors shipped to scotland in 4-5 working days for 10euros from that site.

I see!!... sounds great!

Well, I will see if I cancel my order of the MXL990 and buy some stuff here :)

Thanks for great link, and info about postage costs :)

Im sorry taking this up again... I thought it was another thread :(

What about AT stuff? have you looked at the AT2020? This mic works well on a number of aplications and wont cost you as much as others on your list. I also recomend the B1, great all around mic.

hi dchase!

In fact that was my new question! :D about the AT2020, cause I just found it at Thomann.

What you think would be a better choice between Studio Projects B-1 and Audio Technica AT2020.
my applications would be.. male/female vocals, and acoustic guitar (nylon strings and steel strings)
I think my electric guitar (gibson) will be recorded thru Boss GT-8 into my PC. but maybe I´ll try mic an 15-20 watt amp (but this only if the sound aint nice thru Boss GT-8).

Thanks for your time in advance

www.musicstore.de is also a nice shop located in Cologne, Germany
Bought a pair of headphones from them and shipping was prompt and
reasonable - 6€ to Denmark if I recall corectly.
