...seeing as I am a student, buying something even $100 or $200 is a big purchase and I want to make sure that, when I get a condenser, I'm not gonna find it's picking up even the most minute hum from my amp, because I hear they "amplify even the smallest sounds".

My amp isnt loud at all, its actually really quiet. But I just want to make sure.

So...will the condensers pick that up?

Yes. Definitely. But once you start playing the actual music immediately drowns out the amp noise... I always do a precise erase of any "dead" parts of a track that may some extraneous noise (amp, vocalist scratching chin with day old beard, etc).

Well ... that's great, but I never feel I have the spare motivation to spend a day writing Cubase automations!!

My housemates won't be coming to the Grammy party. But I might buy a chimpanzee.

The gate will only remove noise/signal when it's on, so it's either all or nothing! You won't be able to remove the background noise when the vocals are active. Now when the vocals stop, you can have the gate kick in, but the best thing to do is to work on removing the background noise at the source (i.e moving PC to a closet, telling wife not to do laundry while tracking, etc...)

does anyone know some settings I can use as a starting point using a noise gate on vocals...I'm using the gate in the waves c1 and it's not taking out the background noise...I have the following settings right now
gate open: -60
gate close: -65
attack: 300
release: 100
hold: 1
