I frequently use a 414 with a -10dB pad for snare, though usually in conjuction with a couple of dynamics (one on top, one on the bottom, with the 414 also on the top).

Josephson C-42's will often work like a charm... AKG 451's often won't suck. It will depend more on the tuning of the drum and what you have in mind for a snare sound that will fit with the music than anything else.
