computer upgrades

Everytime on a play back of the song i'm mixing there's a stutter. i think i need to upgrade my computer. i have to upgrade the RAM to fix this problem right? The program works fine other than the stuttering playback btw.

RAM, processor, hell maybe even the whole box depending on what you are trying to record. What are you running now and how much data are you trying to push through it?

try upping the latency on your audio card and see if it goes away.
 
i'm just mixing stuff on reaper i don't record through it. right now i have i think 18 tracks all with at least compression and eq effects and it's very stuttery. before with no effect it wasn't stuttering. i already tried increasing the latency it didn't really help much.
 
Hi, can you give us an idea of your system specs?
W/ effects going on multiple tracks it is possible you need more RAM. a CPU upgrade, or perhaps a faster HDD (if you're using an older 5400 rpm one).

You might try increasing the lookahead for the effects. (It's somewhere in the preferences menu, but I'm not sure exactly where.) I usually run my effects with a 2 to 5 second lookahead. This means I may have to wait 2-5 seconds before playback starts, but it's much smoother.
 
You might also look at your pagefile settings; they may need to be optimized whether you have 7200RPM or 5200RPM drives (certainly 7200 is better).
