I've been studying my references, but I've been unable to figure out how to syncronize the MIDI data flow between my Yamaha SY85 workstation synthesizer and Cakewalk Music Creator 2002. The user manual for my keyboard takes me through each mode, but I need some guidance that describes the process and exact settings that need to be established.
I've followed some basic rules to doing this, but I'm going to need some help from an expert to make this happen because I'm not able to figure it out on my own.
First, plug the SY85 midi out into the computer midi in, then the computer midi out to the SY85 midi in. Then - and this is very important - find the page inside the SY85 that has the 'local on/off' setting. Set it to 'off'. This will break the connection between the keyboard and the sound source inside.
Next, select a track to record the midi information on. Then try a simple part, like a few piano notes. If your interface is full duplex you should be able to hear it in real time. If not, you may need to add one of these or if you need full audio and midi capability, I have one of these and highly recommend it.
If you are planning to transfer sequences made on your SY85 to the computer put the computer into external clock mode and run the SY85 sequencer. This will keep the machines in sync while doing the transfer.
