Compressors

I'm looking at getting a compressor, but where in the chain do you put them when doing tracking.

Uh oh...

Wherever they're needed at whatever point. *Normally* you don't want to record with them (unless you REALLY know what you're after. Once it's recorded onto a track, you can't take it off.

I was just trying to get a more even vocal sound going in, not like a full compression, just to smooth it out going in.

In between the mic pre and the A/D convertor.
