hi !

ok, i'm not a total newbie but i do need your help. first, i have the alesis nanocompressor and i want to get a better one BUT not too expensive ! i've heard really good things about the RNC compressor and was wondering if i should buy it ? also, my local music store rents DBX compressors (forgot which model #) and i was wondering if DBX makes good ones ? (I think the DBX one costs around 300 Canadian and i can also rent it). how would u compare the RNC the NANO and the DBX ?

dan

Yikes! You can't compare any compressor less than a couple of grand to the RNC (seriously!). I have a couple of DBXs - the 166XLs - and although they're quite usable, they're nowhere near the level of the RNC. The NANO is not even in contention (sorry to say...)

Personally, I go on about the RNC as if I'm a rep, but until you shell out a few thousand for the big boys' compressor toys, the RNCs CAN'T be beat, and it just KILLS ME that people waste good money on crap like the 3630 (among others) when for about the same price they can get a unit who's value is worth at least 5 times as much.

Hi,

Again, thanks for the help ... and the quick reply :) I'm embarrased to say that I once owned the 3630 :o (Why I got the nano instead is a mystery ... of stupidity !). Well, I'll get the RNC for sure !!! Thanks again !

Ahhhhhh....

Forget that dbx crap! Unless you can afford their high dollar comp, they are crap.

Haven't used a RNC yet, but hear people talk nice things about it.

Now, don't forget that the RNC is basically a MONO compressor in most applications. It has one set of controls that can adjust a stereo feed. That has shyed me away from investing sorry to say.

Now, trust me on this, a Behringer Composer Pro is a killer sounding compressor. I have a bunch of them, and use them all the time in live situations.

The Composer has a very big league Peak Limiter, in fact, as good as any I have heard. The compression is very nice too. Capable of a LOT of gain reduction before much color on the sound.

At $175 dollars, and that buys you TWO sets of controls, basically two mono compressors that can be linked for stereo if you choose, IT can't be beat for the price in a project studio.

Oh, did I mention that the circuitry was ripped off from Drawmer more or less? Basically, it is a high dollar compressor with a very low price tag, much like the RNC.

Did I also mention that I have a butt load of mp3's on my website you can check out if you are wondering if I have
ANY idea of what might actually sound good? Check my profile for a link. My main compressors in my studio are Composers. I have even used one for CD Mastering with excellent results.

I am NOT saying that the RNC is not a really nice compressor (:)). Just saying that it is not the end of the world either. It's mono set of controls robs it of being a great investment in the average project studio.

Don't rule out a Composer. It is a very nice unit too.

Good luck.

But Ed- what about a PAIR of RNCs with that cool rack mount adapter? And I'm now totally confused about that stereo feed deal. I thought the RNC was a mono compressor- period.

I LOVE my Nanocompressor!!!

Ever since I slid it under the coffee table, it hasn't rocked a bit!

Actually, I use it in the fx loop for guitar...adds a nice boost and the more blinking lights you have on stage, the better people think you can play.

A single RNC has left/right inputs/outputs, so you can send it a stereo signal. But both channels are controlled by the pots (no "stereo link" concept). If you send it a mono signal, it doesn't matter if you connect it to the left or right side.

I personally haven't tried the Behringers myself, but I have heard good things about them from others whose opinions I respect (including Ed's!)......... I'd like to do an A/B of the two units to see how they compare... anyone out there have both?? MisterQCue???

Hi Ed,

Thanks for your reply ! I'll definitely check out the Behringer but I was wondering something ... Why the big fuss over the stereo/mono issue ?? I only would use a comp to prevent my vocals from overloading/clipping the recorder.
