The original reason was to keep the vocal level in the 'sweet spot' on the tape. And because, in the old days, you used to only have so many compressors so you would have to compress some stuff on the way in so that you would have compressors available to compress other stuff during mixdown.Purpleb said:So whats the main reason to compress before going in when you can do it afterwords?

In order for it to be a step up from the preamps in the m-box, you will have to spend some money. A decent channel strip will cost $700-$800 on the low side. And, you will still be funneling it through the m-box anyway.Purpleb said:Thanks guys...
