Compressor Settings for RNC

I picked up a couple of used RNCs from a friend and need a little advice. OK, I have no clue how to use these things and was looking for a thread, article or advice on their use. Can I use them to hard limit the main mix? Someone suggested to me that it is one way to protect your speakers from being blown by an unexpectedly powerful signal. If so, what would the settings be? Any advice on settings for Vocals, drums and other intruments.

The RNC site has nothing useful and the best article I found on compression came from the blue max site. Any other ideas? Thanks

Your question is a little confusing. If you want to use it as a limiter across the mains, turn the compression ratio to maximum (25:1), the attack to minimum, set the release straight up, and adjust the theshhold till you see the second LED just flicker on the loudest signals. That should give you some reasonable protection, since it will require the input signal to generate 25 dB more than that to produce a 1 dB change in output.

Vocals, drums, and other instruments will require a little more work than that to get the right amount of compression (if any compression is even needed). Start with all the controls straight up and experiment from there.

The RNC's are compressors only, as far as I know, there is no "limiting", that would be another dynamic processor. If you try using a compressor as if it were a limiter, youll be squashing the crap out of you main output mix. Maybe I just crazy, yeah thats it...

Stupid is as Stupid DuZ!

A little clarification might help. I use the mains for my for studio monitoring AND live sound reinforcement. The live sound is a mix of digital direct instruments (elect Drums, bass and guitar PODS, keys, etc.). When I use the mains for live sound I worry that the monitors could be blown. Rather than buying another dynamic processor (peak limiter of some sort) I wanted to try the RNCs and see if I could use it for some protection. Just a thought.

The RNC will work fine for that application. They are so frikin' fast they'll do about anything except brickwall peak stop. Yes they will still let through a bit of the peak, but I doubt you could blow a driver that fast except in the most extreme case. (Correct me if I'm wrong. )
Settings for vocals and instruments will be completly different. You can string the two in series with one set with low ratios and medium attack and realease times. The 'best' settings will vary a lot from one song or instrument to the next.

Compressing and limiting are the same thing. It is considered limiting once you go to a ratio of 10:1 and above.
