I absolutely agree that it's not a "never" situation; seasoned engineers compress the tracking as part or all of achieving the final desired sound of the vocals on the way in all the time.Jmorris is right. It is a point of discussion, and it's not so cut and dried, as in "Never compress on the way in".
But I do believe that it's a very black-and-white threshold as to whether one should or not:
If you have to ask the question, the answer is probably "No".
