Hello I'm new here and I hope to get informative answers... :-)

Ok... my problem...

I could buy quite cheap a tubecompressor. It was new about $1200.
I do already have a Behringer compressor and it works... but not more... ;-))) and the finish I'm doing by softwarecompressors. The results are quite good I think.

Now my questions: How do I get better results...? With an expensive hardware compressor, or with a ceap hardware compressor and software compressors.

I really don't know if there is a need for that tubecompressor. I already own a tubepreamp and I'm very sadisfied with it...

Thanks...

Then that's probably your answer.

How do I get better results...?

* Play better
* Record better
* Use better instruments
* Play them in a better-sounding room.
* Record to a better medium, using better mics.
* Mix it better

Yes thank you, but these answers don't help...

My question is not about whole recording... just compressing...

How do I get better results...? By using a ceap compressor and software or an expensive hardwarecompressor...??? Just these question...!!!

Some of you suggestions I can't follow (better-sounding room) and some I followed already...!!! I'm not a beginner but I can't know everything and I'm still learing... that's why I'm asking in this forum...!!!

Well, an expensive hardware compressor will probably get you better results. That's why it's expensive. I'm not going to try and make you feel better by telling you that your results will be just as good if you use a ceap $100 Behringer or even an RNP than if you use a Distressor and/or an LA2A

That's either very wishful thinking or just plain silly. :D

Kinda' like me asking which is going to help me pick up more chicks; a Boxter or a Camry (?) Think about it for a second.

Yes this helps already a little...

Let's ask another way round. I give you $600... what would you buy...? A secondhand dbx 566 tubecompressor or a $100 Behringer compressor and a Waves softwarecompressor...???

... one second...
...two second...

Ok... I do not expect a top product with little price (Behringer) and I do not record with a SB Live.

I have no idea what the sound quality of a dbx 566 is like, but for the sake of argument I'll just assume it's at least as good as/maybe better than the software compressor. So, if I had the $600 and that choice to make, first of all, I wouldn't get the Behringer, the choice would simply between a nice hardware and the software. Why pick up the extra cheap gear, unless you have some real need for a hardware compressor that the sofware won't meet? And if there is that need, then it seems like you'd want to go with the nice hardware compressor, as it seems better to go with one nice piece of gear than two lesser pieces.

I personally would go with the hardware, just because some day I'll probably be done with it, either to upgrade to better hardware or to be done with this hobby, and hardware resells a lot better than software. There's also the possibility of software becoming incompatible with future tools you'll want to work with. Remember, I'm assuming the hardware we're talking about sounds as nice as/better than the software, which may not be true.

Your situation is a little different, though, as it sounds like you already have the Behringer and the software. That being the case, the question really is, are you dissatisfied with your current results? Are you $600 dissatisfied? Can you hear an improvement with the DBX, and if so, is that improvement worth $600? That's the real question.

Buy UAD-1 for $600 and you'll have top of the line software compressor/eq
