My somewhat ancient Boss CS2 is on it's last legs, before I get a new one has anyone ever done a side by side with the CS2 and an MXR ?

Hi Clive,

No not with the CS2 and the MXR, but I have done it with the CS3 [right number I hope, anyway it is their recent comp.model] and tested it against the Aphex. The aphex is a lovely compressor, but the Boss can give you certain sounds you cannot get with the Aphex.

I guess that the CS2 can do the same things as the CS3.

Have you ever tried an Orange Squeezer by Dan Armstrong. I think they are a 70s brand and you do not see them that often here.

Hey a bit of topic, but perhaps it may give you some ideas.

Cheers,

Eddie

I have a CS-3 on my practice pedalboard, and a Barber Tone Press on my gig board. The Barber is just amazing! It's the only comp on the market that lets you blend your uneffected signal back into the output of the pedal. It really is the most natural and musical compressor I've ever tried. I plan on getting another for my practice board REAL soon. Sorry about the lack of info on the MXR Dyna Comp, but my experience with it is just from auditioning it in stores.
Try the Barber... ;)

Thanks Guys,
As I live in a remote area we dion't have a hell of a selection but the local music shop has a CS3 so I guess I'll take it home for a tryout. If it is as good as the CS2 it'll have a new home.

I used to have a CS-3 and I hated it. It was utter shit. So I decided to buy a new compressor. I was on my way to go buy one, but my friend said to try his CS-2, so we went back to his house to play it. I was amazed at the difference between the 2 and 3. The CS-2 is absolutely the best compression/sustainer pedal I've ever heard, and I've played a lot of different ones. So I looked on Ebay and found about 8 for sale. I picked up a Japanese made CS-2 for around $90 shipped. It's the second best investment I've ever made, second only to my Leslie speaker system. Trust me, try the CS-2, and you'll never play anything else.

I have to throw in my two sense since I just went through this whole thing comparing compressors. I had never been a fan of them at all until a friend of mine turned me on to robert keeley's stuff. the keeley compressor is really something you ought to look into. they are not cheap but since i bought mine I've yet to turn it off. It is extremely transparent, has won a few shootouts of compressors, has true bypass, and robert is an extremely accessible person should you have questions. I believe guitar world did a shootout of compressors with many standard units and botique units alike. i think the keeley actually won. they are not cheap, I got mine for christmas from my wife. i think she paid about $185. anyways, check out his site at www.robertkeeley.com
hope this helps,
Blake

The only reason I was looking at the CS3 is because my CS2 was purchased in 1980 and I didn't think there would be much chance of finding another, but I'll try ebay.

The Barber Tone Press is by far the finest compressor I've owned (and I've owned 5 or 6). Wide range from subtle to squashed and has a mix knob to dial in any amount of your regular tone into the mix. And it's true bypass.

They ain't cheap but you can find 'em on ebay for about $125 used.
