Compression

Two questions, actually:

1. I use an ER-1, an MPC2000xl and a TR-707 for drums. I like the fact that the drums hit hard and loud, but I think it's time to tighten the leash on them a bit. Given the gear listed above, which compressor would be most beneficial? I've read a bunch of thread on compressors and I'm still unsure.

2. Okay, second question. When recording to my little Tascam Porta02 ( I try to keep sound peaking @ around 0db for hard hits. the rest of the time the sounds generally kicks it in the -5db area. Problem is, I am getting pops and clicks during low bass or low filter sweep parts. I do not hear them when monitoring but they seem to show up when I play the tape back. Any suggestions?

Maybe the problem is somewhere else altogether, overdriving something somewhere, preamps, output gain on your synth equipt... shitty patchcord in the path.. don't know.

Sounds like your using sampled source material so controlling dynamics should be a piece of cake sans compressor.
