Hello,

just looking for some advice, if im recording a female vocalist on a sort of soft jazzy track, what sort of compression settings would be advisable?

Im using the optical compressor on the focusrite platinum voicemaster pro and i have a threshold, release and makeup gain controls. Along with Hard Ratio, Slow attack buttons.

The vocalist i am recording has quite a strong powerful voice but its still a mellow track i guess.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Well...this isn't the answer you're looking for but with comp, there is no one setting for vocals. Depends on the singer...gear...etc...
Read this....

One thing I would say though is, if tracking with compression, GO EASY on it. You can't undo comp once it's tracked.

Hope it helps.......

I've used the compressor on the VMP...

You'd be better served using a decent plug (IMO).

I would probably not track with compression....you want to keep as much of the dynamics as possible (i'm sure you know that). If anything go in afterwards and use envelopes...if you choose to use compression, do so lightly.

Same applies to me...I would apply compression as well as EQ after recording.
