The RNC has one set of controls for both channels, so no, dual mono doesn't work on it.

Maybe that's one reason I was interested int he 3630.......dual mono.

Wow, RNC seems to be a popular unit, and so cheap. What's the downside, if any?

Also, thanks for the tip about mastering using a limiter. Can you reccommend a few? I'm using an older verson of protools LE, 5.4 or something like that, I can't check right now I'm away from my studio. Might I be able to get something cheap because my version of protools is older? I think it might come with a limiter/compressor too, but in my experience the included digi plugins are not too great.

Hmmm, 5.4 was a while back so I don't know if Digidesign were giving away the Maxim plug back then. But if you do have it, I highly recommend it. It does a good job of giving you a apparent volume boost with little color as long as you don't really abuse it.

The RNC is very well made and sounds super for just about anything. The good reputation is well deserved

If you're really on the cheap, one of the best little comp/limiters ever to come along is the old Alesis Micro-Limiter. No, I’m not kidding. It’s not so much underrated as it is off the radar because they haven’t made them for years. You will have to get a used one on ebay.

They have no relation to the later 3630 at all, which has a very bad rep.

The Micro-Limiter is very simple to use. An on-line manual is available on the Alesis site. I have two of them, as well as an RNC and older Symetrix.

They are easily less than $50.00 in excellent condition. Made in the USA before they started outsourcing... good stuff. :)
