Compression... and/or equalizing..?

I'm now thriving for a clear, punchy and bass-y (commercial!!!) sound.

That could be part of your problem right there. Of course, always aim for the best mix you can possibly make, but comparing your probably less-than-modest home recording gear and skills to pro commercial stuff could be an exercise in futility. It probably won't happen....yet. Especially if you don't understand simple concepts like compression and EQ. You're not gonna win the Daytona 500 with parts you buy from Auto-Zone. Get back to basics and learn about how instruments and their sounds affect other instruments and sounds in a mix.
