compressing overheads

... Why do some of you think that compressing overheads is an effect, if it's done right you would be hard pressed to know that there was compression at all, just a fatter drum sound...

Absolutely true. Any compression if done subtly is... subtle. It's like hairpieces and wigs, if you notice they're fake, they're horrible but if they look good it's just "nice hair".

After my two overhead mics go through the mic pre they go through two Summit tube compressors. I have it hardwired that way, so I always go through the compressors. But the threshold is so high that the cymbals never come anywhere near it, and it's only so that if for some reason something is incredibly loud for a split-second it won't ruin an otherwise good track - a safety net. Plus, those are top notch compressors and there's a big difference between them and cheapos. I've never had much fun using solid state compressors on the way in.
