Hey, i was wondering what an example of a compression setting would be on a a final song. this question may be a little general, but i need something just to make everything blend well, to make the vocals and the music sound together. thanks for any suggestions.

For one thing -- there's no "general setting" - it depends entirely on the track involved.

Second - while you can use compression on sub-groups to help blend rhythm beds (by using the attack/release to "lift" or subdue the bed's dynamics), it's not a glue to make your mix elements work -- you have to do that with your arrangement and the sound of each track.

Yeah, you should rather try to compress the single tracks (or groups) first... A overall compression may even enhance a not blending sound... Very often it's the vocals that need compression to be kept from being buried in parts and then come out way too far... (you might try fader riding, too, but only if you know how to do that - I prefer loads of compression). Do a search on compression - it's unlikely you get half-way decent results unless you understand what you're doing...

Blue Bear and Voltreffer are right on. Go back to the mix and check the components. The blend has to happen before the final touches go...

But when you get there, be careful not to over compress for the sake of that tempting LOUDNESS. Radio and top forty purveyors have squeezed the beautiful dynamics out of music and spoon feed the masses 3 minute extra strength koolaid.

It's tempting when you want to fit in, but try and maintain focus on your artistic vision.

peace.
