Oh come on...I started out on a stolen Tascam porta 01...I had to go busking in the high street to make money to buy cassettes for recording on it, £350 is LOADS these days :D
I agree. I didn't quite start out like that, but it wasn't far off, and this was only a few years back. :D

I was talking about everything for £350, not just mics, pres and interface ;):p

Even my good suggestion comes in at £349.92 for mics, pres and interface(what a fluke!!!).

EDIT: Just noticed you can get the Alesis Multimix 8 Firewire - £206.26 or 8 USB 2.0 - £216.34(both 10in/2out i believe and include cubase le, although i'd still recommend reaper), which are less than the DMP3 and Presonus and can be upgraded to 8/10 ins in future. This might be a better option, but the pres might not be as good as the DMP3. Hmmm, you could get the Alesis, then upgrade in the future with DMP3s i suppose... :D

you're calling me out on 8 pence? HAHAHA name me one thing that will better your recording that you can buy for 8 pence....no chewing gums allowed :D

Seriously though, the guys budget was recording only. If he mentioned mixing THEN I'd have chimed in with room treatment and monitors.

I recorded for 3 years with no room treatment, yeah it was a waste of time but it learned me how to record good even though I couldn't hear the benefits properly.

I think my little setup in his budget will be good enough for better than an "alright" 4 mic drum recording and might make him read more and use that platform to expand his recording techniques if he wants to go down that road...then I'll tell him £350 won't meet the budget for a well tuned mixing enviroment ;)

I have been use to my own setup for too long now. They do cards with more ins than outs now? used to be the other way around

I thought USB could only do 2in/2out? or has that changed now too? Man i feel really old. I got the Delta 1010 rackmount when it first came out like 13 years ago? more? I'm running a yam N12 firewire mixer into cubase 4 these days with my PCI slots full of UAD-1 DSP cards. My PIV 3.0GHz single core just won't die and and leaves me no reason to upgrade. :o

Shit, i was about to say that. Erm, I can do 9p Ex VAT http://www.iconuk.co.uk/product.asp?P_ID=175. It'll protect up to 2 cds from being scratched. Imagine you had a CDs to send to someone that could make your career and you scratched it! This little baby, costing only 9p Ex VAT, would save/better your recordings!!! :p:p:D:D:D HAHAHA

USB 2.0 can handle more than 2in2out i believe. And yeah it's 10in/2out, which is weird, i agree, but it is a mixer/interface. Most are still the opposite, although my Tascam FW1804 starts with 8in/2out and can be expanded to 18in/12out.

Microphones:
Shure SM57
For got about this in my suggestions last night. Erm, forget my snare mic suggetion, unless you want to try a condenser on snare(I use an SC300 on snare which imo sounds better than my MB75), but an SM57 is probably the most used mic on snare.

PandaMonk and LemonTree:

Thank you for all your info - it all seems fairly complicated to someone like me at the moment  ...but I'm going out now so I'll read it all through again tonight and post what I think.

Thanks :D

Ok right I think I've decided on the following equipment:

Kick Mike: T.BONE BD200 - £20.94
Stereo Overheads: AKG 2 x Perception 150 - £79.99
Preamps: SM PRO AUDIO PR4 - £57.38
AD/DA convertion/interface: M-audio Delta 44 with breakout box - £85

...which comes to: £243.41

I think it's the cheapest way to do it -sorry to disappoint lol.

Just so this is clear in my head, i would connect the mikes into the preamp box using mike cables and then how does the preamp box connects to the breakout box? just instrument leads?

Thank you very much. Any further suggestions? Would i see (hear) serious improvements over the above by spending more? That is, either going with the Yamaha mixer and the 1010LT, or the firewire sound card mixer/box thingy? The total with the mikes and the firewire mixer/sound card is £307.19. And the total for the mikes and the Yamaha mixer and the 1010LT is £369.12? HA - I'm undecided again now. Is it worth it?

Cheers

You'll spend £142.38+jack cables and p&p on the SM pro audio PR4 and m-audio delta 44. Save an extra £40 and get the Alesis multimix 8 firewire. It'll have much better pres that the PR4 and has the option of up to 10 inputs, if you decide to upgrade later(even with a PR4 and/or DMP3, or whatever). Also, if you spend more than £154 at thomann, you get free p&p.

For £40, I'd say it's a no-brainer. Don't forget xlr(mic) cables and stands. You can get them pretty cheap at thomann. Their cordial range of cables are good, and millenium stands are cheapest you'll find. For overheads, thomann don't sell Perception 150s but they do have other options, including their own t.bone EM700, EM800 and SC140 stereo sets or even just buy 2 SC300s or SC400(get with popkiller, it's the same price). All cheaper than the AKGs(except SC400s), and without p&p if you spend over £154.

Remember, buying from Germany, you get European plugs(with the alesis or PR4). Thomann is a great company though.

Right so:

Mixer/Preamps: Alexsis MultiMix 8 Firewire
Stereo overheads: T.Bone EM700 Stereo Set
Kick: T.Bone BD200
Mic Stands: 3xMillenium MS-2005
Mic cables: 4xCordial 6M black

I think that's about it. Thanks for your time guys. :D

Adam.

How's about 2x Millenium MS-2005 and 2x MS-2002 for kick and snare?

I think this will be a great setup for you. Probably what I'd go for if i was setting up a bedroom studio. The EM800 or SC140 and BD300 might be better, but you have to go with what your budget allows, and I'm sure the ones you've chosen will be great mics for you! Remember to read up on recording techniques (especially recorderman) and post some examples in the mp3 forum once you record! :D
