Over the last 10 years I have been approached by so many people wanting music for a compilation CD. Costs from $150.00 - $1250.00 per song promising everything from getting the CD to the" Power 100" to getting music played throughout Europe and the US secondary markets. Thought maybe we could share some stories and see if anyone has benefited or lost there mind from this experience.

Let's hear yours pashop.

Lets hear your story pashop. You must have a reason for initiating this thread.

Well for the most part I’m just trying to come up with subjects that I think are relevant and move some of the negative stuff down on the board.
I have been approached by many over the years and have been involved in a few.
The costly ones have been the ones where people sell you the fact that they can get you on Radio in Europe. In reality if you spend the time and do abit of research this is an easy task. Most radio stations use DJ that for the most part do not get paid and do the work for the love of it. At the same time they have to purchase all the music they play so if they get free CD's from independents they tend to get played. This is also the case in Australia and South America. The DJ love to communicate with the bands by posting there play lists online and sending emails. Although its fun to tell your friends your #4 in Holland the downside is there is no distribution so other than a few CD’s you might sell on CD Baby or Amazon that is about as far as it goes. The compilation guys will try and tell you it might lead to a tour but generally that’s just hype.
I’m involved in a "Power 500" right now so I will have to wait and see how credible these guys are. The premise here is to get a song on a CD that is being delivered to 500 key people in the industry. This is a $350.00 cost . I will keep you posted on the results.
I have also been involved in a three band compilation where the bands who all knew each other decided to share the costs of recording, manufacturing , promotion, mailing, and even go as far as showcasing in several cities again sharing expenses. This was a great idea and saved everyone a considerable amount of time and money . I also engineered and was the assistant producer for a 13 song CD with all the music and time being donated by lawyers for the Salvation Army to deal with the homeless. The lawyers each put up $400.00 to cover studio time and manufacturing. This project was very successful because of the charity aspect. The amount of press they got was staggering and so far they have raised about $4000.00.
Its amazing how local radio will not give indies the time of day but when there is a good cause involved they can do no wrong. We are already working on #2

This is a good thread that you have started.

The band I have been in 20 years have had different offers. And one of them was Radio Air Play in New Zealand and Austrilia.

Being the cautious sole I am we did not prusue it outside the MP3 thing. I look back at some of the stuff they offered to play and chuckle to my self because its not that good. But they were willing to play it. :cool:And the way I understand it is if an American musician/band takes off and goes oversea's they usually are received very well.

There was this one guy who wanted me to send 50 CD's to distribute to his 50 radio stations. ????? He had instructions for me as to how to send them so he did not get hit with customs (Duties) on them coming in and I was to mark them all "Not For Resale, Radio Air Play Only".
Now I don't know how it all works over there but couldn't imagine any one wanting that many or having that many stations, or even access to that many stations for air play.

I considered it. He even offered to get me hooked up with a distribution set up. But I never did that. Guess I got scared, of what the possible out come might be, or might not be.

Stupid descission I guess. Not the first one in my life and I'm sure it won't be the last, but there are fewer of them now days.

Sounds like you know what's going on though. :)

Many of the DJ's in Europe , Australia /NZ belong to organizations where they communicate with each other through email etc. The guy wanting the 50 CD's was probably doing just that. Because they work for free they tend to help each other out that way. The not for sale stickers on the CD's is for the government otherwise the CD's will be taxed huge when they open the package and many times get refused and disappear.
Keep in mind you have to take them out of the jewel packaging and put them in CD cardboard mailer envelopes then together in one package. The cost of shipping in the jewel case for you and for them is way to much.
Is it worth it?............If you have to manufacture to do it probably not but if your sitting on a thousand CD's that are selling slow then what the hell might as well throw it against the wall and see if it sticks.

Unfortunately, human nature is that we have an insatiable appetite for bullshit and we're never going to get those other message off the front page...but here's another "bump" to the cause.

LOL :D :D :D :D

I don't do business with any company that won't spring for a domain name...

angelfire.com? LOL

If indeed this is their 9th compilation release, then they should at least be successful enough to afford a proper web site with a domain!
