I would personally go with the EMU1212M.

But that's just from the research I've done on these forums and elsewhere.

I'm currently saving for the EMU1212M. Should be a big step up from a SoundBlaster. ;)

If you go for the EMU, you should get the 1820m unless you have a mixer.

It has two mic/line preamps, and a headphone amp.

M-Audio's drivers are more mature and easier to use.

It doesn't do you any good to have really good converters/preamps if the drivers render the card useless...

The M Audio....that doesnt have XLR inputs, no? Are you relying on external pre amp?

I was planning on buying an external preamp, but please, clue me in on the XLR inputs.

For a few bucks more...1010LT. The LT has 2 xlr inputs with 2 mic pre's. I wouldn't pump that feature too highly though. The pre's are low end but useable...downside to those two inputs...no phantom power. But, over all, IMHO, the 1010LT is the biggest bang for the buck. More inputs and Midi I/O.

I should say that I am unlikely to need more that 2 inputs at a time.

I'm listening carefully to these posts.

Also look at the presonus Inspire. It's got 2 preamps built in plus it's got 2 Hi-Z inputs if you need to DI guitar or bass. You also get the convenience of firewire. Pretty good deal for $200.

I'm hoping to use PCI.

Any reason?? The Firewire/USB stuff is a lot easier to deal with, just plug it in and go. You also get a portable interface that way.
